safe engine removal?

I pulled my donor engine by attatching chains to the 'ears' on the firewall end of the head. With it on the floor, I can now see a beefy cast-in loop down near the bellhousing. Is that what I should hook the chain to? It seems as if the extreme angle needed to clear the radiator support would mean that the chain would put a lot of pressure on the valve cover, but those little ear thingies don't look very substantial. I still have 1 remove and 1 install to go, so would like to be safe. Also, what do the engine and tranny weigh together? Thanks in advance for info. I have to go install oil cooler lines and separate the engine from the tranmission, so will check back later.

Thank you,
Scot

It might not seem so

But I will say that I think your whole W123 would hang quite secure from those ears. My, a metal loop like that will hold an awful load. It will bend and deform long before it lets go.

Those ears are there for pulling/suspending the engine, so I bet they can easily handle at least 2x the weight of the engine/tranny without an issue.

i have, ive used them twice on two engines they bend and deform as mentioned but they are very sturdy, in fact i was using a crane that had really crappy wheels on it so when i would pull the engines out they would swing and move all around bending the hooks a small amount but still extremely strong i wouldnt worry about it one bit.

Like every has said "they will work fine, no problem" I have used them many times. buy or borrow an "adjustable" spreader bar too be able to "tip" the engine with the tranny if you chose.

Thanks guys

OK, I'll keep using them . I was just nervous 'cause this weighs a bit more than the VWs and Subarus I'm used to.
I did use an adjustable leveler; don't think I'd have gotten it out without it.

sure you would have, i didnt use a load leveler and i got it out, of course it included alot of profanity from the tranny swinging and hitting the body

I think the adjustable spreader bar was under $20 on sale at Northern Tool. I use the air ratchet on the adjuster nut, really make life easy
