W115

NH Doc,

Nice car. I had a 1974 240D from 1995-1999 and it was a great car. It surprised me with how good it was in the snow.

I hope your car brings you a lot of pleasure.

P.S. Love the color

Just like my car except the paint is much better! They fabricated a window switch panel as I can see.

You're gonna love the way the W115 chassis drives.

Hmm yeah, there was no central bank of window switches on 114/115's was there? An excellent adaptation for full window control from driver's seat says me.

Congratulations Doc, looks to have been intelligent well maintained and never abused its entire life. To hide leather cracks I'd "paint" em blue with sharpie pen to match seat color. No kidding, I did this on dashboard cracks of my 116 makin em black to match the dash. It made subtle difference for slight improvement.

And spaekin of 114/115, remarkable is that MB developed its most advanced car at economy model level with em back in '68 with brand new ball joint suspension unique to 114/115 that makes em nimble as polo ponies, radical change from freight train ride of deluxe kingpin supsension 108 models they ran until 1972. There never was an "S" car in the 114/115 series same as 123's. And the 116 introduced at '73 is entirely different animal with nothing in common.

Jeeze Doc, helluva pair yer 115/116 diesel collection. Treat yer '98 E300 as salty road Winter rat.

Actually there is, my 76 300D has power windows with two twin switches so there is a plastic panel covering the "change tray" for the non crank window cars.

Yup, my old '76 300d had central switches too. The problem was that the entire panel the switches attached to was plastic. After 30 years of baking in the sun it was pretty brittle and broke really easily.

Yeah, that is being tricky, heh heh. Just before he sold it (to one of those buy here, pay here used cars in San Rafael, that had those pennants above the lot flapping in the wind) I used one of those black magic markers on the front windshield and back windshield surrounds, to black out the plastic "chrome" windshield moldings that had faded to brown.

The blacked out look worked buch better, and that 1972 Opel GT, (which by then was burning a quart of oil every 100 miles) sure looked good after I
I detailed it out - but after the first rain came, I wouldn't know....

But hey, it was a long time ago, and at least I never put banana peels in the rear axle to quiet it down, or oatmeal into the radiator to fix leaks.

Nut I never saw the car on the streets of San Rafael again either; and it was chicken fat yellow, with mags, you could NOT miss it.

As others have said, the central window switch bank was there but was plastic. My previous '74 which my family bought new had them there but the cover piece also broke. It was screwed into the base from behind the switches (you pull out the switch assembly and the screws were under it) and the part that the screws went through broke off...very common. The replacement part may still be available from M-B...they redesigned it sometime in the late 70's to correct the weak part of it.

As for the sharpie tip...interesting idea, except the idea of sweating in those seats and then having sharpie ink lines all over my clothes or legs would probably be a little upsetting...especially on my legs...I'd be afraid my veins were rupturing with all those blue lines spidering across the backs of them

Nice find! My grandparents bought a white 76 240D new; it was their first MB after getting pissed off at the American junk that would die at 100k. Then they bought the 126 300SD, then the 300D 2.5T that I drive today to replace the 240D. A while back when I was cleaning out the glovebox in my car I found the 1990 insurance card they had for the 240D, the last year they owned it...thought that was pretty neat. I kind of wonder where it is today, if it's still around and not razor blades by now

Nice 115. I'm surprised they can command such high prices. I've seen really nice ones in the Portland area for around $2000 to $3000.

I've never heard of oatmeal to fix leaks. I used to use black pepper.

If you can find a really nice 4 speed W115 for that range it's a good deal as most go for much more on ebay. Junky ones generally don't sell or go for peanuts but nice, rust-free ones can bring $4-$5K. Of course for me, having them in Portland does little good and shipping one across the country for $800-$1000 seems rediculous.

I have seen some nice auto tranny ones for under $3K - I just wanted a 4 speed this time as the auto is slow as a turtle. It seems that about 90% of them were automatic and so finding a manual tranny model is challenging...then there is the rust issues. Of course if it was always a northwest car maybe rust is less of an issue.

It's ironic because the price I paid ($2500) is exactly what I sold my first one for in 1982 when it had about 150K miles on it. Now, 25 years later I paid the same amount to buy one back. I know in real dollars it is a lot less money...just found it funny is all.

Finding one for a reasonable price 30 miles from my house seemed to be pre-destined somehow...how could I pass it up? By spring I will be looking for a project and now it is already waiting.

individual differences

What is intersting is that my old 1976 240D was quite peppy. It was an auto trans.
Wonder if the rear end ratios were varied ? This one came from Spain.
