Turbo play

I am wondering if anyone can clarify or give a spec about how much up and down (radial?) play is within acceptable limits on a Garrett t3 turbo.
I have no back and forth (axial?) free play on my turbo, but about 1/64th up and down. My understanding is that this may be normal as the shaft rides on a cushion of oil which takes up this slack while the engine is running.
Is this correct?
This question pertains to my wife's daily driver (82 300D), so I would like to avoid down time to rebuild if possible.
Many thanks,
Ray

Correct. The in/out play is what you want to have none of.

The limits are 0.022" (0.56mm) side/side and 0.008" (0.20mm) in/out. Too much play would result in the blades rubbing the housing. The oil pressure automatically takes up the clearance and centers the shaft.
