300SD timing and rear seal (617.951 engine)

Dear All,

Due to some problems I took apart the engine in my 300SD. Now I am at the stage where I'd like to put everything together.

problem 1:
I looked at the many manuals I have (even factory) but none of them detail (or at least I could not find it) how to synchronize the timing of the engine. I found how marks on the crankshaft (well crankshaft plate) and camshaft need to be aligned but not if there are markings on the injector gear that need to be aligned. Is there a quick way to make sure that all these three are synchronized?

problem 2:
The crankcase seal kit I have has a one piece crankshaft rear seal, but instructions I found in the manual talk about a two piece seal. Does this one-piece seal need to be cut or cut to size? If not, where should I position the cut, should it be in the middle of the block or in the middle of the crank cover, or where the crank cover meets the block?

Thanks,

Greg

problem 1:

Are you referring to IP timing or camshaft timing? They are different procedures.

problem 2:

Are you seriously considering the rear crankshaft seal? This requires transmission removal and dropping the crankshaft to install it. It's one of the most difficult jobs that can possibly be undertaken.

Maybe I was unclear. The engine is already out, and taken apart. I am trying to put it together. It is in the smallest pieces possible. So, yes, I am seriously considering putting new seals and gaskets in there
Since it is in small little parts, the timing on it is non-existent at this point. I am going to need to put a new chain on this overhauled engine, and thus I need to know what the position of all three timed components should be when I put the chain on. I gathered some information on the crank and the cam but not on the injection pump gear.

Best,

Greg

OK, that's a completely different scenario.

Some folks have done the crankshaft seal and will advise.

The IP is typically locked in place prior to removal so there is a reference point between the crankshaft and the IP.

However, if this was not done, I do recall that there is a missing tooth on the spline that aligns with a similar feature on the timer. Others who have done this task will chime in and advise.

I just replaced the rear crank seal in a 616 that I had on the engine stand. the crank needs too be removed. The seal is a square, rope type, packing seal. You cut it and "trim" it so 1mm is standing proud on each side of the block and oil pan. The front seal is one piece and you must remove the balancer to install it.

edit The "rope" seal does come in one piece and you do cut it.
