Answer:

Passenger side of engine at transmission bell housing, below exhaust manifold, between exhaust and engine block.

There is a heat shield between exhaust and starter that must come off for service.

10 mm Allen bolts pass through the transmission bell housing, and thread into the starter.
These bolts are tough to access, and often require massive torque to remove.
I use a four foot long half inch drive extension to access from the rear of transmission flex disc area, with a three foot breaker bar.

Have a great day.

starter motor??

I have an 82 300D, so I guessit is in the same place. FYI, the solenoid is misssing a little so I decided to fix it. Shop one was 1100.00 for the starter, shop two was 250.00, shop three was 79.00 plus a core deposit with the starter rebuilt in the USofA.! The solenoid alone was 88.00 from shop three. After the purchase, I discovered the starter motor position, disconnected the electricity, put a hex wrench in the lower mounting bolt, and said "Ugh" a few times. Since there was an ex MB mechanic handy (Air Force Base auto hobby shop), I asked him how to get it out. He said with much effort. I asked about the top mounting bolt, and when he started talking about putting a jack under the transmission and lowering it so you can get access to the bolt with a loooonnngg extension, I asked him how much he would charge to do it for me. The price was reasonable <100.00 so reconnected the electrical and will make an appointment next week. Anyway, the stupin thing is located exactly where whunter said. Best of luck with it!

$1100 for a starter?
I hope you ran and never looked back from that SOB who quoted you that. I don't think even the dealer would charge that much.

At the price of 1100.00 for the starter, I said "Not only no, but h*** No!" It was on the internet somewhere, and I will admit that It might have been mis-read.

That's exactly how my indy did it on mine, took about 5 minutes with the car on the lift. It would be a giant PITA with the car on the ground.

Took me about the same amount of time with the car on jack stands and the wheel turned all the way in the direction it needed to be in. It's not too hard but the starter is very heavy.
