300SD Heater Issue

It has been getting cold here sporadically, and I have noticed some issues with my heater not blowing warm air and had a couple of questions.

When it is cold, 30-40 for around here, the car will only warm up to about 40C. I dont think it is a thermostat problem though, because if it is in the upper 50's, it will warm up to 80C. Does this mean it is a monovalve issue, or could it be the thermostat? thanks guys

I'd say thermostat issue.

Would it be the thermostat even though it gets up to normal operating temp when it isnt cold outside? I guess it could not hurt to replace, do these vehicles take a standard 180 thermostat, or is it a Mercedes only item?

They come in 175 deg, 185 deg, 195 deg....and are readily available....autozone, advance, oreillys all have them. When it's 30s and windy (i remember mempho being quite windy), engine heat dissipates quickly..I'd bet stuck open stat as others indicated.

I would buy the OEM thermostat and avoid the McParts stuff.

the monovalve would only affect cabin temp, not engine temp.
when it's warm out, no thermostat would result in a steady 80C temp, but it would take a LOOONG time to get there, when it's cold out, it takes a REALLLLLLLLLLLLLY long time to reach operating temp. best to get a good 175F (80C) stat in there. keep an eye on the temp from there, if it starts to get hot, you may have water pump issues, or a clogged up radiator.

My '82 300D would not get over 60c, forget the time of year. Here's the t'stat I put in. The car died of other causes later, pulled it back out.

Thanks guys. The advice looks great, as is always the case with this board. Sounds like a quick job for Saturday.
