&^%$#& Pennsylvania

Well it looks like the brainiacs in the Pennsylvania legislature have struck again. The new 2008 E320 Bluetec. ML CDI, R CDI, and GL CDI are not allow in the state. What really torques me about this is the fact that most of the pollution in PA comes from Ohio and points west. In the county where I live, the only emissions test they have in place is a "gas cap" test. Its ridiculous, that they wont allow an energy efficient, low emissions vehicle in this state, there are so many "farm" vehicles polluting the atmosphere with their "offroad diesel". I am not in the market for a new vehicle, but it just frosts me to no end. the 2008 vehicles are now only 42 state compliant!! We are going in the wrong direction if we want more diesels in this country!!

Sorry just had to vent

Yep

crazy, isn't it? Yet my 81 240d is chugging along.....well, at least when it's running.

I can't afford a bluetec anyway - so I'm not too agitated about.

I've never heard of this before. Is this common? Outlawing certain new car models? I thought California was tough on car manufacturers!

Oil company guy to state representatives: "I will give you all a nice long vacation and a membership to this elite golf club if you keep those fuel efficient new diesels out of your state."

Reps: "Sounds good!"

Two days later...."new bluetec diesels have been banned from sale in PA...."

Probably went a little something like that.

I find it funny how you can get a Hummer (most guzzling vehicle ever) with a tax credit but not buy the cleanest diesel (and super fuel efficient) on earth.....in the same state!

This country keeps stabbing itself with dumb choices....eventually it will bleed to death financially!

The following states have equal emission standards to California, they are, Vermont, Mass, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, and now Pennsylvania has been added to the list.

For what its worth, I guess that means the new 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD, and any VW diesels are also banned, have not confirmed that yet though. I wonder if this applies to pickups??

From what I have read this only applies to the registering of new 2008 diesel vehicles in Pennsylvania.

It's time to roll back the switch to California emission laws and press our legislature to make the EPA deliver on it promise to slow the flow of pollution from Ohio. Express your opinions to your state reps and encourage your friends to do likewise.

Vermont

In Vermont you can register a "used" diesel car as long as it has 7500 miles on it. My experience is that a lot of guys like me are running older, less efficient and more polluting cars due to this restriction.
I have talked to my legislators about the foolishness of this, but so far it has been a waste of breath.
Someday everyone should go on their state legislature's web site and look at the list of registered lobbyists. It definitely provides a moment of clarity as to why things are the way they are.

It's funny, but when NY put inthe stupid Ca rules regarding diesels they also left in that "any car with over 7500 miles is OK rule" All of a sudden all the dealers in Pa that were near the NY border had plenty of diesel Jettas and Golfs and even MBs with 7501 miles on them for sale. I bet that niche will now be filled by NJ. Just go buy a "Used" diesel and you are OK

These people who run for and attain public office are something else! It's disheartening to watch, even more so to live with.

Strange and stranger

California had the "used car" rule also; the VW dealers always were able to "find" a diesel Jetta with 8,000 miles or so (and sell it for new price plus).

However, California does now allow the Bluetec -- the dealer had an "introduction recently -- now that ULSD is state-wide. So it sounds like the other states are now tougher than California. Strange.

Interestingly enough, my ancestors came out of the Oil City, PA area (is that Venango County?) and worked for Pennzoil. Some may still do that. None got rich, they were all just worker bees.

Jeremy
Watch for the other states to allow the Bluetec as soon as the Cali law gets into WestLaw and the morons in Albany, Harrisburg, etc can cut and paste it into their books. I bet the Pa law changes within six months to allow them... If not, go get a "used" one if ya need one badly. I am really startin' to LOVE West Virgina! Emissions Inspections? HELL NO!

Naw.. it's time to purchase some representation.

Start an environmental non-profit organization that pushes for environmentally-conscious decisions that consider all the costs. Get them some funding, and then have them hire a lobbiest or two to go schmooze the lawmakers and educate them about how they should vote and what legislation they should introduce.

That's how the governemntal system in the United States works. All that stuff about writing to your representatives and the various governmental organizations is mostly just political opiate to keep the democratic masses from feeling totally unrepresented and overthrowing the government -- they pay attention to that stuff only when serious damage has been done or when their public opinion needs a shot in the arm.

Don't believe me.. go track down the Michael Moore TV series episode where he paid $5000 to hire a Washington DC lobbiest. He had them go around meeting with senators to try to get the US Congress to name a day of the year after his TV show. Worked too.

Sorry.. I'm off topic. Just had to vent I guess.

All the environment organizations I'm familiar with are populated by tree-huggers that welcome the new regulations.
The legislature repealed the first attempt to regulate emissions after the voters threatened to vote for thier opponents.
