Bad blower motor = Destroyed 300TD

This is a sad story. Don't let it happen to you.

Check your fuses. And make sure you are using correct fuse (16 amp) in the blower circuit. Things fused properly should not cause a fire. Any strange smell is a clue something is going wrong...

I hypothesized that dust could have built up and a few sparks could have caused the problem. Sucks either way that was a beautiful wagon in dark anthracite grey which I have never seen on a wagon.

He wrote that he had all new fuses of correct size. Damn. I used to be real diligent about keeping fire extinguishers in my vehicles but I've been lax of late. I'll have to change my habits.
The SLS pump and cylinders should still be worth something(maybe).

Oh man. I always carry extra water/coolant, extra oil, spare fuses and filters and a tool kit when I go out with my 300d. The car is just old and you don't know when something will break.

I've been towed twice already because of my unpreparedness. Now I think I'll carry a fire extinguisher with me too just in case someone else's car catch on fire on the road.

Oh maybe a flash light and a survival knife too. heh. Ah might as well replace that first aid kit in the back.

Exactly the reason why everyone should carry a fire extinguisher and keep it maintained.

A while back I bought a "82" 240D real cheap. The woman got home from work, heard some kind of "buzzing behind the dash" but payed no heed and went in the house. Next morning she came out to get in the car and go to work and it looked like someone had "tinted" her windows during the night. The interior was toasted, from the sun visors dripping melted plastic to the console and dash melted. the car was rust free and not a dent in the body.

This really worries me.

*Mental note
-Buy fire extinguisher for Merc
-Pull blower motor and inspect it

The concept that all of the fuses could be of the proper rating and still having something in the ACC system catch on fire really bothers me, especially since I discovered a slightly melted electrical connection behind the ACC panel with no apparent cause for the damage on my own car. Very, very disturbing.

I think I am going to buy an extinguisher tomorrow. Not a bad thing to have in the car. All I have in my car right now is spare engine oil....probably wouldn't help stop a fire!
