240D Automatic Transmission Shifting
My recently purchased 1982 240D shifts roughly from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd. 3rd to 4th shifts real smooth.
So far I fixed two vacuum leaks with new vacuum door lock actuators in the doors and that seemed to help a little with the shifting roughness. I noticed that the vacuum lines on top of the valve cover and beneath the black plastic cover have cracks in them at their connection points so I ordered some 3mm vacuum hose. The short vacuum lines under the black plastic cover appear to be pre-formed to fit, however I could not find pre-formed vacuum lines and just ordered vacuum line by the meter. I hope this works OK. The vacuum switches seem OK but I have not tested them. The plastic Cam-like part that activates the the vacuum switches has a slightly warn groove in it from contact with the two switches, however my search for this plastic Cam-like part has been unsuccessful. I will replace the transmission oil with Chevron ATF Dexron III and replace the transmission filter. Will I have to buy the Cam-like part from a Mercedes dealer? Do you have any other suggestions to fine tune the transmission shifting? How long can I expect availability of 1982 240D parts? Till 2020??? I still don't have a repair manual. The Mercedes CD did not work on my Mac, any suggestions for a good 240D shop repair manual? I'm working blind. |

You can purchase the cam arms from your dealer or www.dieselgiant.com. I just replaced these on my 240D and it made all the difference in the shift pattern. Smooooooth!
