The 617 wants an oil change for Christmas

It has been kind of hinting for a change to the synthectic type oil. It does have a couple of small oil leaks, but I don't ever have to add any oil. If I go to the Mobil 1 stuff, I could nicely go to a twice a year change, which I would like. Just wondering if oil consumption would take a big jump because of the "small" leaks.

Mobilis in mobile

My '85 300D (original OM617 engine, 239,000 miles) gets Mobil-1 for the winter. The few small oil leaks that it has did not get any worse. The worst leak (seep) is from the turbo-to-intake o-ring, which will get replaced one of these days.

The '96 E300D (original OM606 engine, 249,000 miles) now has Mobil-1 in it; has no leaks before or after.

OTOH, the leak in the '96 transmission got much worse with Mobil-1, to the point where I had the transmission overhauled. (Returning to non-synthetic tranny fluid did not help.)

In general, Mobil-1 is made from smaller molecules that can find and escape from smaller holes. You don't know until you try.

Jeremy
