Alternator problem
I was driving to work this morning and my charge light is burning. Does this mean that the alternator is not putting out. I am 60 miles from home. Any suggestions? Thanks Jack

yep prolly.
I don't see what car you have but most of the 123 and 124 cars have a brush regulator combo that is really easy to change and is pretty available too from common parts stores. It fits onto the backside of the alternator and can be changed in ten minutes with a screwdriver. BTW that is usually what fails first. Check your belt and connections first though. tom W

If there's enough battery power to get the engine started, you should be able to get home without a problem unless your require electricity for headlights, blower etc.

Yeah, the older MB Diesels don't require power to run, but the heat blower, and the headlights do...
stop at a McParts store and have them test your alt, and check the tension on your belts. don't let them sell you a "rebuilt" alternator though. they fail regularly so have them charge up your battery for you and make for the dealer/ or go home and order a factory one. see if you can get a regulator at the store, and change it if it's bad. you can also upgrade to the 85 or 115Amp alternators out of the old saab. all this is assuming you are asking about a 617/616 powered 77-85 MB...

FWIW, the last time I replaced my alternator, I put in a Denso instead of a Bosch at the recommendation on an indy shop (I happened to be in TX at the moment):

Replace your voltage regulator first. I had the same symptoms, this was the cure.

I have been running a 65A Bosch that I got from Murray's auto parts for $121 since June, runs great. It even had new-bearing whirr for a couple months. Thats gone now though.
