Quick oil change question.

Hi
I'm about to change the oil on my newly aquired 1978 240D. I don't have a manual as of yet so I'm unsure of the oil capacity.
Can anone tell me how much oil to add. I'm changing the filter as well
I spent some time on here this morning trying to find out how much it will take but looking through the oil threads was a bit overwhelming.
Here's a pic of my car taken earlier this morning. I got her out of CA. She looks so cold doesn't she !
Thanks in advance.

i believe 240d runs between 6 or 6.5. i would recommend putting in 6 then topping off as needed so you dont overfill

It seems to me like diesels tend to hold a lot more oil than a gasser with an equivalently-sized engine. My 4.7 liter Lincoln holds 8 quarts and I believe my 300TD hold close to that even though it is only 64% (in terms of displacement) of the Lincoln.

chebby's all hold around 5 quarts. 4.5 on the 4 cyls... I like the extra margin of saftey with the larger capacities.

Means there's more capacity in the oil before its saturated with soot and such also. 6 quarts + checking it and topping it off should be good for the 616.

I usually just put in a full 7 qts in our 617's and it ends up just below the max mark.

My manual shows 7 quarts for both the 300D and 240D when changing oil and filter.

I buy 2 of the 4 quart jugs, and put 1 in and 1/2 of the other. Guess that would be, uh, 6.5 quart.

I kinda like the wheels you got on that 240.

7 quarts is too much for any 240D I ever saw. There are some variations, but most of them take 6 or 6.5 quarts.
