W124 Wiper Setup

After many attempts to make my wipers fuction properly on my car I have found that the whole mechanism is in need of replacement. I am not fond of the way the single wiper works on the car anyway as it is complicated and loads the motor too much causing it to burn out. So.... On the US market 300's is it a single or a double wiper? If it is a double wiper I am highly considering converting the car over as all it would require is a cowl linkage and motor swapped out of another car.

US-spec 124's all came with the single wiper. Was there even an option to have a double wiper in other parts of the world? I like the single wiper since it isn't in your view as much, clears more of the windshield, and just looks neat . Many of the people who ride in my car for the first time go "Wow, that's neat" when I turn on the wiper . I think it's one of those little engineering ideas that contributes to the character of the car.

I believe lack of lubrication causes too much of a load on the motor and causes it to burn out. Here is a write up on it.

Taking the wiper transmission assembly apart and servicing it is a pretty straight forward job, and takes only a couple of hours. The parts are cleaned, regreased and reassembled. I have done a couple and hope to avoid costly replacement.

Disassembly and regrease every decade or so will keep the articulation in good repair.

New aftermarket gears are available for the head, or you can cut off the teeth and render the extension/retraction of the arm inoperable.

Replacement teeth are around $125, disabling the "feecha" is free.....

Hmm, I might just try disabling that. I did take it apart and cleaned everything in a solvent tank before re lubing with some good moly lubricant. There is just to much drag for the motor to handle.

I remember the first time driving in the rain in my E300 (210's have the same setup)....

"WOAHHH," I said, surprised as it swept across the entire windshield...
Man, that thing is neat, like a thick octopus tentacle or something...
