Muffler Delete Option

I went to the muffler chop and they removed my muffler. Stuck a smaller diam pipe in its place which I wasn't too happy about but overall I am very satisfied. More HP? Maybe I certainly need to use my brakes more. More low end torque? Oh god yes. I have 225 tires and with just a little bit of dampness on the roads this morning I had a serious issues with traction in ways I have never had before. Cabin noise is not any different at speed, a little louder under 35 and sounds SWEET in the parking garage. I recommend this to anyone looking for a little more umph. At one point I had just removed the muffler and drove around and it sounded like a tank. I think part of the issue was reverb on the floor panels.

Did you get to look in your old muffler, maybe tap it out on the ground? I have wondered if a clogged muffler could be robbing power from my 124. The air filter is new I cleaned the injectors and the compression is decent I am just wondering if there could be a ton of gunk in there. p.s. mine is a non-turbo.

I had tapped it out in the past thinking same thing. Note a whole lot came out. 124 Is certainly a newer model and had other emissions to overcome. Since its a non turbo I would say its probably not going to make a big difference.

I think the turbo was robbed from your car, and too the power along with it. :D Seriously though, a non-turbo car isn't exactly quick. Have you clocked it from 0-60 yet, with a stopwatch?

:hat2:

I am still just a smidgeon faster than my NA euro which would do 110. Up to 100 it was no slouch.

Oh, they'll have decent top speed... but it will take a while to get there, compared to a properly-running turbo engine.

:)

Did you keep the resonator? On my 300SD when I replaced my muffler with a cherry bomb I kept it. It reduces the noise a lot. Also with it my exhaust system is tuned around 1000rpm. Perfect for traveling at 25mph. The second harmonic is around 2000rpm and thats where my torque converter stalls at. The third harmonic is around 3000rpm and thats the rpm where I cruise at 70 to 75 mph. Its also where I get my best mileage. :D

I kept the resonator. AFAIK that is a straight through gas expansion chamber. Drove around some more today. Will never go back.

I have a parts car so Ive been wanting to try this to that muffler, being as though the entire exhaust on these cars is very easy to remove. Whoever said they have a cherry bomb, can you take a video or post sound file? I realy want to hear that!

When I replaced the exhaust on the SD, I removed the resonators completely, new Ansa muffler, sounds just a little more pronounced.

winmutt 12-19-2007 05:14 PM

Drove around more today at lunch. This car is definetely faster than before and loads faster than the NA. Just lacking top end. Need more fuel! Cant wait to "fix" my oil filter housing. Of course Ill have to remove it in which case I might as well remove that pesky max rack position limiter.

I have nothing but a straight pipe on my SD. It is a little louder inside the cabin at speed but nothing to annoy you. It is great when I pull in and shut her off. If I get out fast enough you can hear the turbo spinning through the exhaust. At WOT it sounds like a truck from the rear of the car. I like to watch/listen to my wife pull out in the morning when she takes it to work.

I am guessing it's all in your head. I ran without the resonator and muffler for a while and while it was fun as hell to hear the turbo (i'd of course gun it and back off if there was anyone with their window rolled down) i didn't notice any power gains, just some noise. Or your old muffler was clogged.

vwbuge 12-19-2007 09:37 PM

I didn't notice any power gains but the turbo seemed to spool up a little quicker. I also have a boost controller and a K&N air filter so she inhales AND exhales alot better now.
