Problem is nobody has verified that it is the carbon. Yes, older cars had that issue. I haven't yet. At 60K, there was nothing holding my plugs in except the seized up threads. Has anybody actually pulled the prechamber out and found it full of carbon? Yet everybody seems to think carbon is the answer. For a few, maybe but I don't think that is always the case.

And when does that blessed event occur? When you are 200 miles away from home in the middle of BFE? I wouldn't wait till then. At that point, you have no choice. Right now you can plan the repair with 1 bad plug. Kinda like saying that we don't treat cancer till we are about to die.

Aklim,

Do I dare ask what your oil change interval is?

Never mind.

You've just made a good case for changing them all.

OTOH: Last week you wrote that you do not throw money at your car in parts costs on GPs. You can't have it both ways.......especially on the identical parts (GP) replacement. --Confusing to say the least........

When the computer say so or 10K, whichever comes first. Also using either Shell Rotella synthetic or Mobil 1 synthetic. Hence the 10K max

I've had 3 MB diesels and put over 500kmiles total on them. I've never had a bad glow plug.

That's unusual, in my personal experience.

Perhaps the soot preserved them.........?

Unlike spark plugs, it depends on how things are done. Some have GPs that heat up and continue to heat up for a bit after starting. IIRC, older diesels don't do that. Also it would depend on how you run the car. If you run it for 24 hrs at a time, you might not burn out the plugs as often as if you run it "start-stop" all day long.

No, never had a failure, and I thought it was odd also. I even got the ohmmeter out several times to check them.

They were all 1980's cars, though, and I think I remember reading somewhere that the old ones were built to last versus the newer ones which were pure crap.

Like I said, in the older ones, you also didn't have a timer telling the GPs to remain on for emission purposes. That will contribute to the wear.

The GPs on my E300TD are about 5 times more expensive than my 300SD's.........and look a whole lot skinnier, hence, less stout......

We're talking about glow plugs, not your fancy GPS unit.

Some people have to work all their toys into the conversation.

Geez.

Actually, we're talking about glow plugs in a 606.

But some people have to work their ancient toys into the conversation.

quality control

Would it be wise to consider the replacement manufacturer of the glow plug(s).

I just had a round of 6 bad new Bosch (India) plugs. Then I realized my OEM originals were Beru (Germany). Got credit for all and paid balance for Beru.

Do it right the first time !

If you read the entire response and quoted it in context I said later in that same post "If I had known then what I know now I would not have tackled that job since it was pure luck that I didn't break one off then..." so I am not inconsistent. At the time, in 2005, there was not as much information out there in terms of the risk of breakage during replacement so I did change them all but now I would not do that...unlike some people I do learn from experience and can actually change my opinions on things.

FWIW I see no benefit in responding to your "jabs" from now on, Joe. This is the last time I will spar like this so I hope you've enjoyed it...from here on out you can have the last say anytime you like and if you happen to post a question looking for help I'm not going to respond to that either.

You seem to believe you have all the answers even though you have been driving a car with a fuel leak for 9 years so apparently you don't...this board is for an exchange of constructive ideas and helping others while receiving help in return not trying to alienate people who are here because they want to share their experience and knowledge with others and they happen to disagree with you.

I see you simply revel in misery...why else would you live with a lemon like your car and ignore everyone's advice on how to resolve it but still stick around here and stir the pot every chance you get.

From now on, I'll simply ignore your posts and maybe others will too so remember that if someday you do find yourself in need of advice on how to fix something and nobody comes to your aid.
