W123 Determining if my transmission is the original

How can I once I get the number?

I am having a really hard time seeing the numbers on the side of the transmission. I can see 722 315 since I know they are supposed to be there, but the rest are fairly unintelligible, even after some cleaning. The stupid exhaust is in the way which doesnt help. So I am hoping I can find the original tranny # and work backwards.

Thanks,dd

Run the VIN through the russian decoder or send it to the MB classic center. They will give you the original engine and tranny #s

Easy

It is really very easy to take the rubber donuts loose at the rear of the exhaust. While it is hanging loose, don't exert to much force on it, but it will probably allow you to move it enough to see the numbers

Maybe you can get it from EPCnet Online. It's free now (for U.S.) although you have to put your credit card info in and select $0. I entered my VIN but don't know why I'm getting 2 numbers: 722315 W4 A040 and 722315 02 659841.

The first set of numbers are for the model and the other is the serial number.

Thanks. So the s/n applies to the transmission as I believe the car s/n would be the last numbers in the VIN.

In the number 722315 02 659841, "659841" is the actual s/n.
