Autolite? More like Autojunk!

Here's the deal. I put new Autolite glow plugs in my 190D less than 2-months ago. But recently it began starting hard (and eventually not at all) so I measured voltage to the plugs...yep, voltage to the plugs from the relay. I pulled plug number one; it was bad. Pulled plug number two; it was bad. Pulled plug number three; it was bad. Pulled plug number four; it was bad. EVERY plug had failed within two months. I replaced them with Bosch and it starts better than it ever has.

Lesson learned.

Did you actually test the plugs to see if they glow, or their resistance?

Yep, Bosch or Beru are your only real options. Just wasting time and money using other brands.

I get by very well using whatever glowplugs from the junkyards test good.

It's hard to beat free, no matter the brand.

Seems like a lot of hastle...a new set of duraterm plugs can be had for $50 or less and will last for years. A single trip to the junk yard costs me about $4-5 in fuel + $2 entry to the yard, and I have yet to find a diesel of any sort there (always gasser MB's)...so new is cheaper.

For you probably, but for me it is worth spending an extra 10 minutes to collect a set of plugs from a car I'm already looking at. I have a mass of probably 20 plugs in my toolbox that all test good, I should be set on glowplugs for at least the next 4 years, longer as I collect more. Thats around $200 saved for about a total of 45minutes work.

When one goes bad, I Ohm test them all to see which one is bad, grab a spare plug from my toolbox, swap it and finish my lunch break. The hassle of going to the store or ordering a set online is eliminated, and its still free.

I have gotten cheap enough to just keep one or two new spares in my parts inventory and test/replace only the bad one(s).....I used to just do all 5 if one or more failed.

I think you can get a little more than that from non-dealer sources.

Wasn't Autolite a Ford company? It doesn't surprise me that Ford would make junk.
