how long will a water pump weep before it pours?
I am in trouble! I am on a trip for Christmas (about 500 miles from home) and our 1987 300d's water pump is beginning to weep just a tad. I need to head home and don't have time to wait for a part. How long until she blows typically? Anyone have experience with a dying water pump.
It's still just weeping out the bottom hole and not visible out the top hole yet. In case that indicates anything.

If the pump is not making noise, the chances are very good you will make it home.

No Noise yet. I think I will make it too. But I'm not familiar with water pump failure on the benz. I've got the part ordered to be home when I get there, assuming all goes well on the ride home.

I drove for about 2,500 miles with mine clanking like cans banging around and a significant amount of weepage. Never failed on me. When I took it out it was pretty hard to rotate by hand though.
![]() Replaced mine at 215,000ish miles.....yeesh that was a long time ago. ![]()

mine never wept, it just failed unexpectedly, I suggest you watch your temp gauge like a hawk, and you might consider leaving the radiator cap loose, so that the system doesn't build pressure and blow out the seal.

oh, and another thing... I know I said just one thing, but I am chatty today... anyway, most auto parts houses do stock replacement water pumps for the 126. stop at one and see if it is in stock... if it were mine, I would fix it before driving an inch.

I've checked all the local parts stores AutoZone, Advance, etc. and no luck. Everyone has to order it. The nearest dealership is 60 miles south of where we're staying with my parents, I believe it's near a suburb of Chicago.
So... I think I'll have to loosen the cap of the resevoir and just drive on. Wish me luck! My wife and I will be praying this thing makes it. Sounds like there are some mixed reviews on water pump leaks. I'll have to keep a close eye on that temp gauge.

There is a dealership in Downers Grove, IL (on Ogdan Ave.) just south of chicago. There are also a couple of independent shops in that area, that dealer referred me to one when I was trying to get an alternator replaced on the road a few years ago.

I think you'll be fine. I believe you've got an expansion tank low coolant level sensor.........correct? If so, that will warn you well before you get into any problems. |

True, I do have the low coolant sensor. The bad part is my light has been on since I bought the car and it's always had enough coolant. So there's something gone bad in the sensor circuit somewhere. I knew it'd come in handy at some point!

When my water pump failed, it was weeping slowly but barely leaked while I was driving. It leaked after I parked the car. I ordered a new pump on-line but needed to drive the vehicle while I waited for the part. I kept a few gallons of water in the trunk and topped off the level when needed and kept my eye on the temp. gauge. Fortunately, I had no overheating problems and replaced the pump a few days later.

Just to complete this thread (or at least my story), made it back to Missouri from Wisconsin just fine. Still coolant in the reservoir last I checked.
Thanks for the words on past experience. Yep, I was definitely a little nervous with the #14 still running the engine. But no problems, thankfully.
