Over Heating 87 300SDL

Okay, I just flushed out my coolant system by puring in some water from the garden house three times. I had the heat on, when I was letting it run with the coolant system closed. Then drained it out again, and pured in one gallon of MB coolant that was light colored. NOT RED. Part Number, Q1 03 0002 that I picked up from the MB dealer.

So after putting in one gallon of coolant, I filled the rest up with distilled water and let the car idle in the garage.

THIS ENGINE IS NO IRON LIKE THE 80-85, I KNOW THE PROBLEMS IF IT OVER HEATS. I KNOW I KNOW.

The temp was normally around 82-83 C before I did the work, but know it went up to just under the second white line after 80 C. So thats close to 100C Right, or am I off.

The coolant tank is completely full. What should I do. Did I over heat something when I was filling it up with house water, and then turning the engine on and turning it off the drain the system. I did that three times. Then I drained it and added the mb coolant and distalled water.

I know that sometimes when I drain and refill my coolant, I get an "air pocket" or "air bubble" at the top hose of the radiator. Since the air is trapped there, the water passage is either blocked or restricted at that spot and can cause overheating. I've had this happen to me a few times. So now, I open up the top hose at the radiator and fill up the bottle until I see coolant coming out of the hose. Or, I fill the coolant into the top hose until it overflows, close it up, and then top off the rest into the bottle. I'm not sure if this an "official" procedure, but it seems to work for me.

Your right on the money.

That was the problem I had an air lock in the system. I took off the top rad hose and pured in about a half gallon of distilled water and fired her up.

Her temp is down to 81 C, lower then when she was on the green nasty coolant.

I was going to say do that, and let it sit overnight. As it cools it will suck more in.

Doesen't sound too serious.

While I've only owned W124 OM603 engines, I've found it required "burping" to get the coolant system filled.

Another thought is that if you ran the system "dry" for a while, this can cause the t-stat to fail and the t-stat can then open/close at a different temp than previously.

Jack up the front of the car, and then add coolant, helps to get it into the heater core.

Oh, and set the HVAC control to full heat to ensure you are circulating the coolant in the heater core.
