It is generally recommended that you use the M-B fluid by nearly everyone. You can ignore this recommendation if you want to save a few dollars, but then, if your transmission failed prematurely you would always wonder if the tenth of a penny a mile you saved by using another type of fluid for the 60K miles between changes cost you $2500, wouldn't you? And for good reason, because nearly everyone told you to use the correct fluid for the 722.6XX which is the M-B brand.

Mobil ATF is about $8/liter. The new backwards compatible Mercedes fluid is about $9/liter. Why even think about not using the correct fluid?

I changed mine and used the MB fluid, to me not worth the risk.

Checked Level

I checked the level and color of fluid.

The level was above the first marking on the flexible bip stick and the color was yellow.

I am having service on Tuesday and wanted to add some. If it is real critical I will not drive the car until then. The tyranny shifts and drives as it should mpg has been in the 29+ range only once i got 32 mpg.

I don't have a lift or ability to torque so i will have to have it serviced in a shop. any recommendations for a NJ freehold area shop?

But MB dont make special ATF - it is all either Dexron 2 or 3 depending on the age of the car. And Dexron 3 is backwards compatible anyway. The right Mobil ATF is the same stuff so dont get ripped off. I paid about 25% of the MB price for my Mobil ATF220 - which is recommended by one of the top UK indi's for the older W124s.

You don't need a lift. You can drain the pan and do it with jacks and jack stands. Why don't you bring it to a MB dealership since they have the clip to hold the cap in and SDS to check the temp which is what you need.

No but they might have a batch made up for them. Without a laboratory analysis, you won't know which company made it with what. Why bother with a few bucks and hope that you won't have a worry later on?

I'd be curious as to what they do for the $483.00 since I can't figure it takes 4 hrs to change a filter and drain a TC. My dealer charged me way less than that. Ask them specifically how much labor it is to drain the pan. I suppose you could just fill it with the correct amount and go to the dealership to have them check the level of the fluid since they will need to hook up SDS to see the temps and use the dipstick that we don't have.

Just about everything in this post would be correct up to the 722.6XX era but you are wrong about it from that point forward. After 1997 when they started using the electronic transmissions they stopped using straight Dexron fluids. Please don't post a response unless you are certain your answer pertains to the question asked, it only serves to confuse things.

Call a different dealer. MB of North Haven did it for about $200. They just didn't want to do the job.

At the risk of starting a war here..... I have been using a "non-German Made" non-Mercedes tranny fluid in my 98 E300 for about the last +30K miles. But I am an old gear head and can afford the risk of replacing/rebuilding the tranny if the experiment fails! Believe me I did some research before I had the confidence to buck the factory propaganda and try something other than the foreign made factory recommended product. So far so good.....but I think 100K without consequence will be the real test.

The Key Word here is Experiment. Using a non-factory recommended fluid in the #722.6XX is an experiment that could very easily have a result that is not positive!
