Will the passenger side airbag present a problem when installing that '91 dash in an earlier 124? I looked at a '94 dash and saw some struts to mount the airbag panel, I believe it needs the reinforcement.
The early chassis doesn't have that so whats a solution? I hope someone else has already BTDT so I don't have to reinvent the wheel.
and Thanks for the deetailed how-to on this. Its a huge PITA. I've replaced a dash in a couple 123's and a 115 chassis but never delved into the 124 (yet!)

The passenger airbag was optional in '91, not sure when it became standard. I also don't know if the airbag dash is the same as the non-airbag (pass-side) dash, but I'll continue to look for a non-passenger airbag dash. The one I pulled without airbag seemed identical to the '87 in mounting and construction, except for the wood strips.

The '91 300E that I saw yesterday did not have a passenger-side airbag. Glad you raised the question, diehard, one more thing to watch for!

Remember that the dual-airbag cars got the cool locking tambour-door compartment in the center console though.

Got one!

Scored an uncracked black dash from a '91 300E today at Windsor Pick and Pull. Removal took only about an hour and a half, thanks to your instructions. I found nothing missing from the instructions, BTW. The radio, climate control, and upper switch panel had already been removed, making the job a little easier. Much of the preliminary disassembly I had done at one time or another but the dash itself I had never done. Some of those screws I would never have found without your notes to point the way.

The instrument cluster was really tough to get out. I suspect it had never been removed since the car was assembled; the four rubber pieces probably had 'welded' themselves to the dash and really held the cluster in place. My coathanger-wire tools were just not strong enough but fortunately I had brought along a hook-shaped o-ring removal tool. Even it bent under the strain (a Harbor Freight cheapo) but I finally succeeded in getting the cluster out unharmed. I bought the cluster with the dash and should be able to convert the gasser "economy" gauge to a diesel boost gauge, based on a thread posted on this forum last month.

They had a second 300E alongside but its dash was badly cracked. Both cars are recent additions to the P&P "mothball fleet." Now I need to figure out the best Navy blue paint for the black dash, so it will match the interior of my car.

Nice work. I wish I hadn't sold my blue dash, I'd have happily traded for a black one.

You might consider putting the black dash in your car, that's what I'm planning for my blue interior. I'll use the black upper, and use the blue lower panels from my old dash, the two-tone look is in all dash colors except black and blue and looks very nice with the lower half matching the doors. You will need to pull the glovebox door apart to use the blue lower panel, the lower panels from the old-style (w/o wood) will fit the wood-trimmed later upper half.

I'm trying to see this in my head . . . it would be less $$$ and time to do a "black and blue" color combo and would appropriately celebrate this "abused child" of a car I own.

Do I need to get back to Pick and/or Pull and get the black glove box door? Don't recall seeing any wood in this one, maybe I got the year wrong and it's older than '91.

Wood is '91 and up, a strip across from door-to-door.

You can get the glovebox door from PnP for your swap, or paint/dye the upper half (gloss level match will be tougher than color match).

Look at dash photos from any brown, gray, cream etc. cars to see how the factory 2-tone looks, 124/126/201 et al.

Be careful pulling a dash from any warm-tone interior. The upper dash looks black at first glance, but all interior colors other than black/gray/blue have a dark brown upper dash.

Thanks for the continuing guidance. My new dash came from a car with a light brown interior and lower dash but the upper dash looks black, even in bright sunlight. Granted that I want the upper dash to look black, as honest as I try to be with myself, I can't make the upper dash look dark brown. Could it be VERY DARK BROWN? In any case, as long as there's nothing black in the car to compare with, and since the new dash will have a dark blue dash mat over it, I suppose it really doesn't matter.

The glove box door came from that same car (an '89 300E, as it turns out, so no wood) and is black (?) over light brown. Any tricks to disassembling the door to swap colors and the lock cylinder or is it pretty straightforward?

The adjacent car at P&P turned out to be an '88 300E. It has a nice grey interior but the dash is as badly cracked as my blue one.

Look closer at that dash, compared to real black you will see it. Probably won't be noticable in a blue car, I have one in the shop that is palomino lower and it's difficult to tell the difference between the brown and black.

Either way, you can always re-dye with Sem color-coat, I've done it many times and it works great.

I ended up painting my black (?) dash with SEM "Shadow Blue." I used several coats and let the finished product dry for at least a month before installing it in the car. The color match is amazing and, thanks to guidance received here and lots of pictures taken during removal of the old dash, I had no problems.

Although his list is quite helpful, I would never have done my first one without the FSM. I printed out all applicable sheets and it took me right through including disarming and removal of the airbag and steering wheel.

I've pulled the wheel once or twice for this, but don't feel that it saves any time JMO. Extending it does.

I've only pulled the dash once, but I left the wheel on and extended it also.
