300SD Trailer Wiring

It is my understanding that if I overload the brake light circut it will fry the CC amp. So what is the correct way to wire up trailer lights on a 1984 300SD?

Thanks
-Joey

I don't know the correct way, but on my 82 they just tapped into the left brake light. AFAIK it worked, I know they didn't up the fuse size at all because I checked.

It can't add that much load, heck a lot of us wire up a couple more brake lights with larger bulbs, a trailer can't be much worse.

If I remember correctly, The CC amp senses a ground through the brake light bulbs when they are off, when you are not braking. It senses power through the same wire when the brakes are on. I don't believe there is any more or less current flow going through the CC amp with trailer lights hooked up. You may actually be OK. Whether or not the CC amp can still get the proper signal with the extra lights I don't know, but I don't think they will fry it either. I will check my wiring scematic when I get home but there will be a few more people chime in too. Eric.

my trailer lights haven't caused any problems with my non-functional cruise control

I used a $15 taillight converter to sort out the blinkers/ brakes for a 4 flat connector. no adverse effects.

I think the Cruise senses a ground thru the brake lights when applied, canceling the cruise

Several years ago, I hooked up trailer lights on my 81 300D by splicing to appropriate wires at rear of trunk (right at the rear light assemblies) - tail light circuit for tail lights, brake light circuit for brake lights and left and right turn signal circuits for turn signals. Worked fine; never caused any prob. with cruise control.

I already have beefed up lighting in back (82 watts) on my car..both of our SD's do......so when I did trailer lights....I used all LED lights on the trailer....as the original incandescent were way too dim...not enough juice. With LED lights on the trailer they are super bright....much better for a low lying trailer....people will notice it better. Not cheap though.....cost about $65 to outfit our trailer with the LED stuff.

IMHO on boat trailers LED's are the only option, they are so nice!

Some folks have added an extra socket to the open hole, and wired up another brake light.
I have not done this yet, but have two extra sockets that can be installed, and wired up.
