'93 6cyl diesel into a '87 603 wagon?

A good friend of mine wrecked his '93 300D. He has a '87 300d wagon that the head finally let go at 320,000mi. Will the '93 engine install into the '87? I realize that we might have to run the '87 inj. pump, intake ect. but is the long block part of the engines the same???

I think the '93 300D has a 5 cylinder engine.

As Eskimo said, if the donor is a 93 300D 2.5 turbo, the only kind sold by MB in the US, it has a 5cyl engine. It should be a straightforward swap mechanically but I don't know if the power steering and SLS tandem pump of the 87 TD will physically fit the 5cyl engine.

Moving the Diesel electronics and wiring will be a challenge. Take the opportunity to adapt the 87 boost wastegate control mechanism in place of the 93 vacuum wastegate control mechanism. Then you can disable EGR and ARV and not be so dependent on electronics. At that point it might be possible to run the 5cyl IP using the 6cyl EDS.

Hopefully the 87 AC compressor will bolt to the 5cyl block so you don't have to mess with a refrigerant conversion.

Sounds like a job not worth getting into. Sorry for any ignorance on my part not seeing that the 93 was a 5 cyl. 40 years of working on cars and you learn something new every day. Thanks Guys!
