85 300D vs. 84 300D

What are the diffrences between the two year models if any?

Biggest is the rear axle ratio and the torque converter stall speed.

1985 has 2.88 vs 3.07 rear end ratio, and the torque converter has a higher stall speed.

I've heard the turbos were different also, but am not certain.... Might have just been the CA versions.

What about electronic shifts versus vacume gear shifts... Or were any electronic components upgraded?

both federal, I assume.

I just added the 85 to the stable, and haven't even driven it yet, but there is way more vac crap related to emissions than on the 84. the turbo is slightly different from the outside. I bet the trim is the same, I have garrets on both.

the IP on the 85 has some electronic doodad on it, emission related, I am sure.

one is a year younger, too.

On a side note- not to hijack too bad- I am searching for a 617.952 for my 85- what major difficulties are there adapting an older version?? just eliminate all the extras?? or do I need to swap IP's? and what about the extra egr crap- can it be ditched on an 85??

85 has a rack position sensor which operates in conjuction with the tach and overboost solenoid to provide better fuel consumption. I also believe it works in conjunction with the EGR/AVR as well since the 3/2 valve is replaced with an electronic pickup.

I would go with the 85. Assuming its a US federal model it has a much improved vacuum system for the transmission as well as better (IMHO) stall speed and rear end ratio.

That said the final decision should come down to the condition and state of repair of these vehicles.

Are you comparing 2 cars or just getting a ballpark feel between the 2 years? Are the cars sitting side by side? Where are the cars? Are both cars rust free?

Ca 85 has the air cleaner behind the R/F headlight, starter has the silinoid
on the bottom to clear the Trap Oxidizer so costs more. Down pipe,
intake/exhaust manifold and turbo also redesigned.
The IP has the rack position sensor, there is a little box on the back of the IP with a large wire going towards the firewall. the 84 also has this.

I discovered the transmission pan gasket is different than the Fed 85.

I would def go with 85. More complicated but if you bypass all the enviro stuff its a good car.
