The 603.971 ('92-up) engine, 3.5L in the W140 body, had more HP than the 603.970 in the '90/'91. Not sure where it all came from, but flow isn't a bad place to look. Mainly came from the higher RPM of that engine compared to the early 3.5L which had a much lower RPM limit than the 3.0L.

In fact, I'm not sure you need to turn up that IP, it's only a hundred RPM or so lower than the 3.0L and (should) have a higher injection rate (higher profile cam) in the pump than the 3.0, thus your better off-the-line punch and better emissions (been there / done that to a CAT engine of mine).

All of the later (#17-up) heads have "angled injection" which improved emissions. This means that the injectors are tilted, which contains different pre-chambers and nozzle holders, and different glow-plugs. With the .97x injector hard-lines it is a bolt-on, the lines have a little more bend to make it fit without pre-stressing the lines (a known factor in failure so don't stress them).

Once the angled-injection head is installed, you will need to remember that the glow-plugs you'll order from now on are for a '90-up SDL. The additional advantage to those plugs is that they're "afterglow" rated, can stay on after the engine is started, and that is why I suggest getting the glow-plug relay and temperature sensor also, to take advantage of this clean-start system (so much more civilized sounding).

can you point out the temp sensor I need off it as well? actually I'm assuming its already in the new head so it will come with me when I get the head. Possibly getting it tomorrow, depending if Pwogaman is up for another junkyard run.

At the risk of sounding like a kid who inherited his parents diesel, the plan is to add an intercooler, specifically one I've got a line on off a 7.3L powerstroke if it will fit I have a friend at work who has been building up Volvo's for awhile and wants to take on the project with me. Whatever I can learn about 603's from you guys will help, I haven't kept up with the diesel performance forum lately although I probably should. I grew up on 616 and 617's. This season the 500SEC gets to have all the fun, but I'd like to come back next season with the diesel and turn some heads.

Good question. The 2.5 has a combo gauge and glow temp sensor under the #2 injector. I don't remember if the .971 has the same deal. If there's a 2-post sensor in that position, it's likely what you need.

Sixto I thought you were one of the guys who did the 3.5 head onto 3.0 block before, did you or am I thinking about someone else?

Also I had bought all new injector lines for mine about a year ago- I also do have a pipe bender, can I just add a bend to mine to make them work? Id rather use my newer ones instead of an old set.

You could be thinking of someone else because lots of people have done it. I've done 3.5 head over 3.0 block (87 SDL) and 3.0 block under 3.5 head (93 SD)

I don't know how inclined .96 injectors are in a 22 head but I had no difficulty getting .96 lines onto .96 injectors on a 22 head. I don't have a tube bender so I know I didn't have to bend anything more than I could with my fingers if at all.

I would do it with newer lines. Older lines can be work hardened, brittle, could be tempting fate. If I had to use older .96 lines on a newer head I'd probaly leave them alone and just force them on, with newer ones there is only a few degrees so tweaking the bend might work. The important part might be to NOT kink the line and reduce the I.D. New lines are often bent with hydraulic pressure inside to maintain the I.D.

On the after glow, I installed on my 603... great mod. I did it for super cheap. GPs I used were Bosch 80006 or something like that, I'd rather not have to buy new plugs but if I must so be it. At least if I must, the plugs in my SDL will work in my SD.

Can anyone confirm if the injectors themselves are the same between angled and non-angled motors? I don't want to rebuild a set then have them not work.

Is there a thread I can be linked to by someone that describes what needs to be modified and where? I have a complete 18 head, which came off a 3L motor.

Also, anyone have a spare intake manifold? I have a stripped thread in mine. I'd swap it for a clean one if someone wants to IC their vehicle or something, mine is perfect. The stripped bolt is at the crossover at the valve cover.

The injectors are not the same. When I had mine rebuilt by BKast, it was a question that came up. That is when I learned that I had the old style straight injectors. IIRC the threads on the injectors are different.
