The W126 rear defogger, you are kind of up the creek when they give a problem with the wires laminated in between the glass. water gets between the rubber and the glass and wicks between the layers making the corners milky.
I think if the rear gasket is replaced about every 10 yrs with a car that is not garaged will cut down on the problem. On the W123 defogger, if the lines on the glass get scratched where they are not connected, that line will not work. There use to be a metalic type repair kit, to repaint the line back together. Also when removing the side panels to check for voltage. I think the drivers side is the plus side. and the Pass side is the ground. also be careful with the strap from the glass to the body. It is fragile and can crack and need to be resoldered. thats my 2¢ worth charlie
