Are you just trying to put the replacement mirror onto the old bracket? On a 126 sit in the passenger seat and grip mirror arm - with other hand insert a flat blade screwdriver between base and bracket and pry. You will see the horizontal tension spring appear. Just use some pressure twards the driver side of car and it will pop off. Keep your hand on mirror while removing - and don't ask why I know this.

...Unless you're theDon...

He dropped by last night after hanging from his mirror and it wouldn't budge. I thought he was kidding and then I did just about the same thing. I just put my hand on the base and give it a quick jerk down and to the side. I've done several this way...but theDon's wasn't giving up. No problem...a few love taps from my 3lb mini sledge...and I bent it! A little more working and it finally came loose.

Not sure if I'd recommend this...but I have more than one spare mirror, and a spare windshield from the 280CE I'm parting out.

A little bit of lube on....

...the two spring loaded balls will ease reinstallation.

Question How to replace glass in door mirror

I would really like to know how to remove just the glass in my door mirror.
I then could cut and seam a new one. Some one had a new one ( the whole thing ) on ebay for $185.00. That is a little too much for me. Anybody out there ever done it?

It's supposed to break away forward, not downward.
