So... you want better mileage?

How far are you willing to go?

http://forum.ecomodder.com/showthread.php?p=2110

I want a C111 body kit.

Could have been done more smoothly on the front but still very interesting for something homemade.

So, who is going to do it first?

Anything that could make a W123 more aerodynamic?

I've got a roof rack with its own fairing on it to improve aerodynamics that way, but its still shaped like a brick and gets fuel economy to match.

I think it is just a terrific study! He says he is getting 95 mpg! That is nearly double the amount of the stock bodied car. Of course the rear visibility must really suck and parking it in a parallel space...fuggettabbouttiittt.

It shows how improvements can be made using different design parameters than the factory. The tradeoffs are servicability, visibility from the inside, Parking space required, and total skirting of the impact regulations.

It does remind of the c111 and other low drag cars created back in the era of intuitive visual design. I really dig those little spoilers behind the rear wheels.

looks like fun... I would rather do it properly rather than that hodge podge of horribly formed metal and pop rivets? ... But kudos to him..

plus.. I would use a rabbit diesel...

I think I'll join another forum and see what I learn... I currently get 23 mpg at like 75% city driving.. not bad... but.. I drive with my foot mashed on the go pedal

Yeah, and the first thing to do would be to drop it from the stock truck-height that MB set the suspension at. You could also block a good bit of the grille without affecting cooling much, if at all -- radiators really don't need as much open area as cars used to have.

Neverminding the fairing, removing that rack would be helpful. I was going to remove the rack on my 300td, but you have to remove the sunroof and sunroof frame to be able to get to the bolts for the middle stanchions.

I remember looking at really old magazines with articles about guys that built cars from WWII drop tanks from airplanes. They were aerodynamic to the extreme and got ridiculous mileage for the day. Engines of the day were not efficient, no need.

The other thing that comes to mind are the cars designed for speed records on the salt flats.

I have a friend who did this with a rabbit diesel; looked about the same...eeechh!
Made his poor wife drive it; He was getting in the 70MPG range on trips without doing any engine tricks. He used rain-x instead of wipers; ultra skinny high pressure tires; no radiator fan. etc...
This is when fuel prices were cheap, diesel was 75 cents;..... everyone thought;.. "what? 50+ mpg isn't enough?"

My friend is bicycle racer so he understands efficiency & aerodynamics at the gut level.

Hi guys

Hey guys. Name's Darin, I'm one of the admins at Ecomodder, where the Aerocivic thread is located.

I just had to register to say...

First, you guys have been remarkably level-headed in your response to the car. It's been picked up for discussion by dozens of automotive forums, and with the exception of this and one other forum (of Nissan Z aficionados), the vast majority of "auto enthusiasts" have gone utterly ballistic over the car's appearance and (admittedly less than perfect) workmanship.

Most missed the salient point about what he was trying to accomplish (whether or not it's something they would personally try to accomplish) and the fact that he did it. You guys have been a little more restrained, let's say. Mildly complimentary, even .

Second, I had to register after reading the last post by Mr.Kenny.

Any chance your friend is online? I'd love to see pics & hear more about his Rabbit. Any chance you could put me in touch with him? You'd be surprised (or maybe not) at how many hard-core cyclists are interested in aeromodding their cars.

cheers-
Darin

PS - not a total stranger to the appeal of MB myself. My late grandfather, a farmer, climbed GM's automotive ladder his whole life. You know: Chev, Pontiac, Olds, Buick ... right up to Cadillac. And in his eighties, having gotten to what he thought was the automotive pinnacle, said "there must be more than this." So his next (and last) car was a lovely E class 4matic, which I enjoyed driving every chance I got!
