99 E300 Loss of Power
The problem is loss of power when travelling at highway speeds - particularly when going up hills and when fuel is below half a tank. The transmission shifts hard when dealing with this problem. Also, a strong smell of diesel around the car and what looks to be a small leak of fuel - I see a stain on the driveway from time to time.
I'm thinking it's: Fuel Filters Fuel Lines O-Rings K40 Relay Hopefully not the injector pump The dealer says the transmission, which I had them change the fluid in and re-seal 30 days ago is throwing codes. They think I need a new transmission! Thoughts? I'd like to be a loyal diesel follower - had a '91 VW Eco Diesel through grad school - loved it even at 50+ horsepower. I'd like to keep driving a german diesel. I just had the control arm bushings replaced, the ball joints replaced, the motor mounts replaced and the cupholder replaced...yes, the cupholder replaced. I want to drive it for another 150,000 miles! Help! |

Your symptoms are indicative of leaks in the fuel system, particularly on the suction side of the lift pump. The part costs are trivial to fix this; a hand ful of o-rings and some labor should clear it. Check too for leaks around the top of the injector pump - could be delivery valve seals, another common leak area.

Don't go to that dealer. Please provide that dealers name/location so others can avoid. And yes as nhdoc states, sounds more like common symptoms with fuel leaks. I replaced most of mine recently, not a big deal.

ditto.......as has been mentioned......replace clear fuel lines and the "O" ring on the little pre-filter and also the "O" ring behind the Shut Off Valve where it connects to the side of the Injection Pump. Don't touch anything else for now. That will probably solve your problems.

Just a thought but do be certain that the fluid on your drive is diesel - I had an ATF leak at the front of the car, directly underneath the radiator.
From what you describe it does sound like a fairly serious fuel leak though, which normally is simple to rectify. |
