Exhaust?

Hey all new to this site. Came from another site where most of the information I get is "do a search". I have a 1985 300SD (W126) Turbo Diesel. On the stock exhaust before the muffler there are two more what looks like mufflers. What are these and are they needed?

Resonators. They are not required for the engine to run properly but they do reduce noise.

It won't be THAT loud. I run with an open 3" downpipe and it's not bad.

I also got rid of mine. It is not that bad. I just have a straight pipe the entire length of the car.

When I was running mine sans everything I noticed I started having a hard time hearing my wife. Then again maybe thats just marriage and old age. Seriously tho, it is something to consider.

The turbo actually muffles quite a bit of the noise. A normally aspirated motor will be much louder with mufflers removed than a turbocharged motor.

I think the muffler must go as well. I will make sure the tip points to the ground 45deg or so.

depending on where you live you might get in trouble

according to FL Motor vehicle Law " a turbocharger is not an exhaust muffling device"

but as long as you are not hot dogging it in front of boss hog.. you're good

I was playing around in my 84 awhile back, i had the exhaust off the downpipe ( so did my friends 1980 240dl) and damn, that soundt loud. Sounded like a semi truck. I was at a red light with thew popoe once, and I noticed he had his window down. He didn't even look at me when it turned green, so its not too loud, my friends NA 4 cyl volvo engine was dangerously loud though, and it gargled like hell. Anyone know what causes the gargling in a gasoline engine?
