Check engine light...code P1365 any ideas? - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

CEL came on last night on my 97 E300. I have AutoEnginuity software for my PC, so I checked the code today.

"P1365 Unknown trouble code"

Did some searching for that code online and came up with nothing.

No noticeable difference in drivability at all when the CEL came on. The information display screen on the dash says "Engine Electronics"

Anybody seen this before, or know what it is?

I've checked my files on MB specific codes and searched online too. I find nothing.

Did the code erase? Did it come back?

You could try posting on the Tech forum. Just dont mention diesel or it will be moved back here. Title it "P1365 for W210?" and mention 606.912 in the body of the text. Someone like M.B.DOC or ILUVMILS will know what it is and what to do about it.

I Reset the code. Next trip a code set again. This time is is P1367.

I hooked up my laptop and looked at realtime data on the way to work this morning. The one curious thing I noted was the "air flow from Mass Airflow Sensor" read zero the entire time. All other parameters seemed to be reading correctly.

Bad sensor?

Those are GLOW plug failure codes.

P1 365 is for glow plugs #1 or 2 & P1 367 is for glow plugs #3 or 4

The "relay" looks for current draw every time they function.

Each plug draws approx 20A when cold & approx 15A when hot.

Multiply that times 6 & you get approx 120A cold. Checking with an inductive ammeter is the best way to diagnosis.

Given that it was 1365 yesterday and 1367 today, that suggests that the problem isn't an individual glow plug, but somewhere in common circuitry.

Absolutely no difference in ability to cold start (I did have the block heater plugged in this morning, but needed only the same small amount of cranking to fire this morning as last week).

Also, I reset the code this morning while driving, and the code set itself again before I got to work (there was no engine restart in between setting the code twice).

Without knowing more about the circuitry (yet), this suggests it's not an actual glow plug failure, but perhaps a glow plug staying on?

Update;

I pulled the glow plug connector and check resistance on all 6 glow plugs. Found #4 glow plug open. Removed the mainfold crossover pipe, confirmed that it was an open glow plug and not open wire.

Replaced #4 glow plug, reset DTC. Put 300 miles on the car with about 5 restarts...no problems, no codes.

MY 1997 is having the same code P1365 and if its cold wont start but when it gets warner as the day goes on it starts. I replaced these glowplugs a year ago and about 15K. I cant believe these GP's only last a year.

Is the only way to tell if its the glow Plug relay compared to an actual glow plug is to test each plug?

What the test to see if its the relay?

I hate when both my diesels are not running right!

You test both the GP's and Relay with a multimeter.

Go to dieselgiant.com and follow the W123 instructions to test GP's. Diff relay but same principals.

Concentrate on cyl 1 & 2.

WHat does it mean that the Glow plug is "open"? Does that mean it reads about zero on the multimeter?
