What do you guys think of this aftermarket air intake?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MERCEDES-300SD-300D-Stage-2-PERFORMANCE-INTAKE-KIT_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ38634QQihZ008QQitemZ180205778898QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

I have been wondering since I bought my car if there was a way to make a different air intake system. I don't know crap about cars, but I could tell that the one Mercedes put in could have been made much more efficiently. Let me know what you think, I'm considering buying this kit.

Here we go again (search on K&N and save everyone a heated argument)

I bought one from the guy a few years ago, the parts are cheaply made and the price has gone up quite a bit since then too. the "oil seperator" will start to melt after a few months and start leaking oil everywhere. I had the kit on one of my cars untill the adapter from the pipe to the turbo split. all this kit does is keep the intake noises from being muffled.

Like someone said, this very kit has been discussed here quite a bit in the past. I made my own with some leftover parts. No real gains in power but the turbo spools a little faster.

Let's clear up a few things.

1: It is NOT a "performance" intake.
2: It is NOT a "cold air" intake.
3: It does NOT increase the power of these engines at all.
4: That filter is WAY too small for the engine.
5: $165 is an EXTREME RIP OFF, you can make all that yourself for under $50.

Don't waste your time or money. The stock air filter is a true cold air intake, the stock air filter flows more air than your engine can use and the stock system is a very good match for your engine.

The only "benefit" to wasting $165 on that is it makes the engine sound louder.

That just about covers it.

more efficiently??? apparently the engineers used such a design for a reason. Like others stated, it is a true cold air intake. As well as the fact that diesels take in more air than needed and the turbo just shoves in more for more efficiency.

If you want more turbo whine and sand in your engine.. go for it...

a 617 turbo is not a performance engine by any means and a "stage 2" air intake is a joke.... if you reallllllyyyyy want a stage 2 intake buy a honder

Calling that piece of junk "aftermarket" is giving it more credit than it deserves. I think "flea market" would be a more accurate description.

Don't! If you must go for a K&N filter, you can order one for the air cleaner you already have. Your not going to get the performance gains you think you will with this thing and most likely will pull more dirt into your motor!

I went with a K&N filter, but I also wrapped the filter with a foam rubber oil soaked air filter prepad and saturated my filter in oil to make it function like an oil bath filter. This was because here in the desert, we have dust storms that will screw up a paper filter and go right through it.

Periodically I have to take my air cleaner off and really clean it, but it's worth it for the dirt trapping ability, something this device lacks!

A K&N to fit your original MB genuine filter chamber is about $40.00, $6.00 for a foam pre-element and $5.00 for a quart of filter oil.
