Questions about Valve Lash on my 84 30SD

Currious
So I finnally got around to doing lash, about 8K past due. I was noticing more smoke at start so it was a nice day and I did them. I had to fabricate some 14 MM wrenches to use which worked fine. Question is they were all out of wack, but all tight, I would have thought that the clearence would increase with wear, what gives??
One I set them properly, she started with a flick of the key and no smoke.

It's normal for the clearance to decrease as the engine wears.

The valve face pounds itself into the seat in the head..........driving it upward..........and reducing the clearance to the rocker arm.

Thanks Brian , makes perfect sense, Mine was in real need to do, I have read posts that say the interval is too short and to go 25K, after seeing mine , I don't think that is wise.

not only does it pound the seat, but the valve also stretches as time goes on, remember your valve is allways being stretched, when your asleep its being stretched.

Well, if we are going to go into that kind of theory.... then we would have to consider that the valve springs are also being taken to a less strong state..... if the valve stretch were in the realm of making a difference in the length of time between usual valve adjustments..then on the other valve/head design ( old fashioned American engines as an example ) it would pretty much cancel out the valve train wear....
After 20 something years and billions of compressions.... if you get a chance to change out the valve springs...they are relatively cheap if you already have them off the head...as when one would be putting new valve spring seals on your car... same for the valve rotators ...which I consider one of the best inventions ever...
