Darned OM606

So I changed out all the o-rings for viton since the originals on the fuel lines that I replaced last year were natural rubber.

Take off intake manifold, pull all lines, etc.

So now IM is on and I'm replacing the rubber oil hoses on the valve cover....

Naturally the rear elbow is brittle and falls down inside the valve cover, where I can not get to it. AARRRGGGHHH!!!

Now I have to pull the injection lines, IM, valve cover, return lines, etc.....

I'm really starting to wonder if there is some Diamler-Chrysler engineer that I need to kick in the nadgers.

I love how I have to spend over $120 to remove a pesky cheap piece of rubber. My question is: Why oh why did they not put a metal nipple upon which to slide the elbow instead of just a hole that leads to the world of pain???

Yours must be a 606.910 or 606.912?

This is not such an issue on the 606.962. Has far less rubber CCV fittings under the plastic cover covering the inj's.

And WHY are we doing this on a Sunday night???

Nope it's a 606.962 in a 1999 E300TD. I guess I'm just a glutton for punishment.

What broke? #65, 68, 71, or 74?

The other parts shown dont apply to ours.

The same thing happened to me a month ago on my '98 E300. I was replacing the leaking return lines, and I had to move the CCV hoses to get to some of the lines. I broke about 2/3 of the barb off the elbow in the back (there was absolutely no flexibility left in the rubber). I couldn't see where it went in the valve cover, so I put the shop vac hose over the hole and removed the oil fill cap to get some air flow. I figured I probably got it, and I really was so disgusted with the car I didn't care much if I didn't (delivery valve seals, water pump, fan clutch, and starter since October). I ordered a new elbow along with the other rubber joints in the CCV system from the dealer. I slipped the damaged elbow back into place and ran the car as usual. More than a week later, I picked up the parts from the dealer, and attempted to remove the elbow again. I don't know why it I couldn't slip it back out the same way I slipped it in the hole, but I broke off the remaining 1/3 of the barb. I could see a piece of it this time, resting on the galvanized sheet metal shield under the valve cover. I bent a piece of wire and fished it out. It turned out to be the large piece I lost the first time! I fished around some more and dragged the other piece into view and lifted it out. So, the larger broken barb was still there after hundreds of miles of driving. I suggest you do some fishing before you remove everything. You may get lucky.
