Quick question... damn quirky W124 does it again
My heat went from hell-hot and powerful, to slower with a bit of a squeak, to nothing at all.. Heard a noise that almost sounded like plastic shattering and my heat won't come on anymore.
I assume my blower motor is shot. Does anyone have any idea how much it is to have this fixed at your local family MB garage? Not the dealer. Parts and labor. I'm a broke college student and my heat breaking in the dead of january of all times, isn't what I needed right now... And the shop is closed mondays. How much should this cost? Any help is appreciated, thanks Carmine

There's a possibility that something is lodged under the blower that is jammed in the blades and preventing it from turning, leaves sometimes get into the air intake if the small screen is off but thats just a long shot. I can't imagine what the smashing sound was.
Also suggest checking the strip fuse, its in a separate fuseholder on the L side near the brake booster it might be blown. If its blown then you need to figure if the motor is shorted (thats why the fuse! Early Benz had no fuses and the motors were known to short and melt wires and even burn!) The blower is located in the center of the cowling that runs along behind the engine firewall. There are number of small clips that hold the plastic covers on and its fairly easy to take all this off just remember how it goes back if you embark on this. The blower is held in by a clamo ring that snaops in place and there are a couple of 10 mm bolts involved to get the w/s wiper motor out of the way. If you get that far and find its a bad motor then I suggest buying the blower with fan blades installed, there are blower motors for sale (about $70) but getting the old blades off your motor and onto the new motor is usually impossible, I've never been able to drive them off without damaging the blades and getting it unbalanced. A new blower will be factory balanced witht he blades and they will run you about $275 for a Bosch or $135 for an aftermarket (same for fit and function) from experience I believe its about a 2 hour job, so figure $200 to $250 labor (shops vary) Good Luck with the 124!

That is one heck of a good write-up! My 95 started to squeak yesterday.

The writeup is good, but I don't understand why he removed the wiper arm. I've removed several from the early to late 124s and just pull the wiper assembly complete.

+1 on not removing the wiper arm. No need, just remove the whole assembly.
