Anyone changed a ring gear on the flywheel/flex-plate

I may need to do this on an OM617. Has anyone done one?

Thanks.

If its anything like a deutz/perkins. you heat up the ring gear with a torch and then take some drift and knock it off. as for getting it on, freeze the flywheel in the chillchest overnight and then heat up the ring gear before putting it on, after you do that it should just slip on. (Make sure when your pounding the new ring gear into place that it is Level so hit it on one side and then hit it on the opposite side to keep it level as it will definitly crack if you get it lopsided its cast iron.

It would be cheaper to yank a used flex plate from a junkyard and check it's balance against yours.

Is the flywheel on the OM617 balanced alone or is it used to balance the crankshaft?

usually it is neutrally balanced, but apparently when they couldn't neutral out the crank on its own they would add the fw and balance them together. I have had I think four that were totally neutral. One was not. To be sure you have to check the fw you take off for neutral balance. If it is neutral you just install a neutral fw and you are good to go. If it is not neutral you have to match balance the new fw and install it in exactly the same position of the one which you marked before you took off. (you did mark it before taking it off, right?).

If you need a 617 automatic fw I have several I could ship. I believe all are neutrally balanced.

Yes, I definitely marked it. I may cut work a little early and head to the machine shop.

Thanks for the replies.
