I Think I Have a Gremlin

My 85 300TD has some things happening and not happening and I suspect they might be related. The car is a euro car and has manual heater controls, but still has power windows. The blower motor will only work when I first turn the key to the glow position and it cuts off as soon as I start the car and will not work once the car is running. The back passenger window has not worked since I bought the car. I have replaced all of the fuses and the window switch. Tonight I noticed that when I depress that window switch the lights that illuminate the heater controls go out until I release the window switch. These same lights also seem to enjoy operating only when they want to. There is no rhyme or reason to why they work sometimes and not others. Any ideas about what I going on here?
Thanks,
Shane

I suspect a key switch problem is causing the blower to malfunction. Try turning the key a little bit with the engine running to see if the blower kicks in.

Go through your entire fuse box first, checking for problems and (Some say) replace all of them just on a lark. See if that improves anything.

Ditto, I've actually replaced what appeared to be "Good" fuses, for the hell of it, in attempts to solve a problem and bammo, that is what the problem turned out to be. This happened very recently on my 560SEC, when the A/C condensor fan was not kicking on whenever I had the A/C on. I pulled the fuse, it looked like new. I stuck a new one in there anyways, and the thing has worked fine ever since.

I have actually already replaced all of the fuses and the drivers window is working. I believe the drivers front window and the passenger back window are on the same fuse. That is what I dont get.

Can also be the wire that passes from the pillar to the door thru the rubber boot. They can fail from constant flexing and cause a short or an open. Lights dimming could indicate a short!?!

A jammed motor is also nearly a short. One of these two is probably what's going on with the lights dimming when you try to operate that motor.

Thought this was going to be about an AMC Gremlin. Had a guy in my SCCA region who autocrossed one with a 304 V8 and some suspension work. He did pretty well! It was green metallic.

This part sounds like a bad ground or a poor connection inside the rocker switch. Did you replace the switch on the door panel or on the console?
I think the ground point is under the console or ashtray somewhere. If memory serves correctly, there is also a 6 or 8 pin connector under/behind the ashtray. You might make sure it's not loose.

Some Good News

So this morning after starting the car I backed up the key a little bit and like magic the blower comes on. I am now wondering if I just need the part the key fits in to or if I need a whole new ignition assembly. My keys are mismatched anyway and I have been toying with the idea of buying all new tumblers anyway so that the ignition and all of the doors will match. Any suggestions there? As for the window issue, I don't think it is the switch. The switch is brand new and the front window on that switch is working. The switch on the door itself also does not make anything happen. I am leaning toward the idea that there is a wire problem in the hinge area of the door. I do not enjoy taking doors apart, but I guess that is my next step. Thanks for all of the help!
