1986 300 SDL (intake manifold and injector pump info)

Hey guys,

I recently purchased a 1986 300 SDL from a friend, he had the car in the shop to have a fuel leak from the 4th injector fixed. The shop replaced the o-rings but said that did not stop the leak. The mechanic also stated that the #4 injector was not supplying the proper amount of fuel. Their conclusion was to replace the entire injector pump with ONLY a new Mercedes pump ($1700.00 for the part). My buddy asked the shop to reassemble the car and he would pick it up. After discovering that he was selling the car to me, they wanted him to sell the car to them instead. After lots of back and fourth, they parked the car outside for us to pick up. When trying to start the car we noticed that the intake manifold was in the trunk in a box with several screws and small parts. The fuel injectors were not connected to the pump and not sure what else.

I need to reassemble the engine parts and need a picture or two, a diagram, or some serious guidance to use as my reference. Can anyone help me out?

I am also open to any suggestions for a cheaper fix of the injector issue.

1. I have considered rebuilt injector or rebuild the ones currently on the car.
2. Buying a used or rebuilt injector pump?
3. Have a buddy that is great with cars that thinks he may be able to flare the fuel line and install a different o-ring. (What do you guys think?)

I have rebuilt three 123 models and drive one today. Not as familiar with the 126 model.

I hope this makes sense......if not I will try to be more clear.

Ron

probably have a diagram or two

Ron,

Somewhere around I have a 603 engine manual. I can scan a diagram or so if you need them. My scans are typically too large to post here. PM an email address to me and I can send them that way. I am working late tonight and all day tomorrow, so it would be Sunday at the earliest.

I would have a problem with the shop. They were supposed to reassemble the car weren't they? I would make them put it together to make it drivable.

Ron
Ron you need to get some facts straight first:
1.Are the injectors leaking???HOW??Please describe.
2.Where is the injector pump leaking??

My advice to you:
-don't worry abt the intake manifold before you figure the leaks first;
-don't buy any new untill you determine what is bad and what is not;

1.If the injector is not supplying enough fuel then most likely it is clogged. First step is to get the sucker out and take it to a diesel shop and have it pop tested...I would test all of them depending on milage of vehicle;
2.The o-ring on the IP stub pipes MUST BE the OEM Mercedes replacement. Make sure those shop guys didn't replace the original o-rings with different ones;or lost the spring that goes in each hole. Ohh, I almost forgot abt the copper washers! Make sure those are not missing also.To remove the stub pipes you need a torx bit!
3.Buy a new intake manifold gasket....there should be also a 2nd gasket for the turbo to intake elbow, buy that one too!
4.Check your Injector to Injector pump lines, make sure there are no stripped threads at the injector or at the IP.
5.Put everythign back togheter...you should not need a manual really just lots of common sence. It never hurts to invest in a shop manual if you plan to keep the car in a long run.

Of course, I would have but I figured I would put them up here so the forum can benifit.

Clean, thats filthy! I'm in the process of cleaning it. Thats after a season of road grime has built up, and its got a few new oil leaks. Most of which are already sealed, I have been busy.

It sounds like the shop messed with the deliver valve seals and screwed it up. Research the repair in the archives and give it a try before removing the IP.

As for the injectors remove them and have a Bosch shop test them, if any fail repair as needed.

The injector #4 is leaking form the top (where the fuel line goes into the injector). The o-rings have been done twice and the #4 fuel line has been replaced once.

Thanks guys for the helpful information. I am actually glad the shop left the parts off the engine..sure makes my job easier.

Ron
