reason for lousy fuel mileage.........
item is a 84 300sd with about (?!!!!) 220k miles. fuel mileage the last couple of months has been around 17 mpg. and very consistent. decided to check odometer. result, it is reading about 70% of figure i record in my other vehicles. so the 17 mpg is actually around the 24 i normally get when the weather is cold. eom.

If all the low milage problems mentioned were only this straightforward it would be nice.

You weren't very clear in your post. Are you saying your odometer is off by 30%?

I would love to know why VDO chose the use such soft plastic for the gears in the SD odometers... EVERY one I have seen has the SAME problem... time to replace the gears in the odo... at least it's simple to get the cluster out of an SD, as opposed to the D series. no lines or cables to unscrew... just lots of wires.
