Vibration Sensation Agitation

85 300D turbo. I am starting to notice vibration whenever I am on the gas pedal: accelerating, cruising, decelerating. Does not seem to change with speed, is not there at idle, is almost always there when my foot is on the gas pedal.

What's the likely cause? My diagnostic and repair skills are (ahem) limited.

Thanks.

You say the vibration is not noticable at idle. Is that with the tranny in Park or in gear.

I would first have the engine mounts, engine shocks, and tranny mount inspected.

You can also move the linkage by hand while the engine is running and in park.

You may also have a bit of fuel starvation. How are the filters? Air filter can be dirty also.

Do you notice any smoke when the vibration occurs?

Thanks for the suggestions. I have not noticed the vibration when in Park. Let's say I am driving down the street at a constant speed, vibration is there. When I take my foot off the gas and coast to a stop at a light, the vibration is gone from the time I take my foot off the gas until I give it gas to start off again. I have not noticed smoke. Since the vibration is there so much of the time, if vibration=smoke then it would be smoking almost all the time. So, I suspect no smoke.

If there was fuel starvation happening, would there be a noticeable loss of power (I have not noticed that)? Can you explain what you mean about shaking the linkage (keeping in mind that I am not much of a mechanic, and this is my first MB). I want to exhaust my limited DIY diagnostic abilities before taking the car in to the shop.

Thanks again.

Slip it iunto neutrak when it's doing it to narrow it down a little. If it disappears in nuetral (while moving under the same circumstances as when it's happening), it could be driveline related. If it still exists under those conditions, I would check the motor mounts, tranny mounts, and all that usual stuff.

Solved

FYI, turns out that two of the three bolts on the driveshaft flange had sheared off. I found out the hard way today, when the third bolt went.

!! Did it do much damage? There's a link on Dieselgiant's page that shows some damage from that occurring on a W126 I believe. Any pics?

I had it done at the shop, so I have no pics. He said the hole on the last bolt to go had deformed some, but thought it would be fine. Just labor plus new bolts. The only damage was $216 to my credit card!
