Another Injector Question

What is the spray pattern like in these old IDI engines we have? Is it a narrow stream, cone shaped or just a wide blow with no real shape? From what I have been able to read on the internet it seems to depend on the design of the chamber as to what the pattern is like.

The reason I ask is the replacement nozzles I have for the car have a cone shapped pattern with considerable volume and the injector service company says it would cause my car to smoke and have a loss of fuel mileage. The up side to this is he has a source for German made Bosch injector for the MB cars and recommended using those.

But to make sure the pattern was not the same he just ordered one of the German Bosch injectors to compare the pattern. I have a gut feeling the owner of the shop is being honest and trying to help me. For one thing he and his wife both drive diesels, she has a VW TDI (2 years old and over 70k miles) and he has a Powersmoke Ford.

It is a narrow stream that uses the ball in the prechamber for better atomization.

That is what the Diesel Service Shop owner had said, so I guess I will send the Bosio nozzles back for a refund and use the Bosch nozzles he has recommended.

They are at the shop and I don't have it written down here at the house. They are listed for the OM602 and several other engines. The injection shop owner said they would be fine in a direct injecton engine, but not an IDI like early MB engines.

If they are Bosio nozzles and made for your engine you should have no problems. All but one of the threads I have read on them including other internet articles all have had good reports. The reports are better idle/running and seat of the pants feeling of power. No one that I can remember reading has commented on mileage. Some have said they are not as quite.

I know that the german single tank wvo company Elsbett uses a flat cut pintle design, similar to the bosio nozzles, as part of their conversion. also many peeps (not all) which have installed these seem to be happy.
YMMV

Well considering the average MB these have gone into is 20 years old with 175,000 to 250,000 miles on their injectors any new nozzle is bound to be an improvement even if not the correct ones.

My thought is how many of these people have had these in for any real length of time like 50,000 to 100,000 miles or can remember or know how the car engine drove when new?

Also how many people when they replaced the nozzles, replaced the springs and then had them pop tested and checked by qualified injector shop? I have talked to two other injector shops about injectors for these cars as far as spray pattern required by MB & Bosch for these cars and they all say a cone shaped spray is required for optimal combustion, not a solid stream or a wide spray such as found in a direct injection diesel. My guess is these will work great in a VW TDI and I did have a set in my '00 NB TDI that worked great but would really suck the fuel down when given heavy throttle, but I think in my old MB IDI it will not serve me well compaired to correct injectors designed for the old MB & the IDI engine.

These shops also say that no Bosch injectors are being made in Germany and are coming from Bosch plants in either Italy or India. These people report that the failure rate of these nozzles is not all that bad and are found to be not much different then when they were German made.

Now the good news is that two of my injectors cleaned up fine, have no real wear and tested excellent like they were new. The shop is ordering 5 new nozzles and they will be either Italian or India Bosch and he will test them all for spray pattern and quality. He stated it is not unusual to send a bad unit back to Bosch.

The shop owner of Bootheel Diesel Injection Service seems to really know his diesel fuel systems and from what I can tell is trying to help me and not just get my money and push me out the door.

I will keep all posted as to outcome of this effort.
