Dead Starter?
So I just finished installing a new water pump/thermostat on my 85 300td. It ran well last night (after the install) and I started it up many times with no problems. This morning (10 degrees f) I went to start it a nothing no cranking at all....I is the same as when I try to start the car but its been left in gear. I don't think it is alternator/battery because the headlight glow strong and when I turn the key the lights don't dim at all. Any suggestions on what may have happened. I've never had a starter problem before. One thing to note: The + battery cable has been on very loosely lately, could this have caused the starter to burn out. Thanks in advance.
Brett

I don't think it's your starter, I would push on the shifter and try starting it in N instead of P, to see it the Neutral safety switch is holding you out.

You can also check by jumping the two outer connections in the juction box. Follow the big positive cable from the battery. It is on the right fender on W126 cars. If the starter turns, then it is OK.
I am also of the opinion that it is the NSS. It seems that we have had a rash of them failing recently

Also keep the key turned to the starting position for 10-20 seconds. My wagon has a very long delay when it is cold outside. Somebody on here had the same issue and it is the electrical portion of the ignition assy.
Have you jumpered wires 1 and 3 at the terminal block after glowing??

Could be a bad connection somewhere in the wiring. Could be a bad ignition switch. Could be a bad neutral safety switch. Could be a bad starter although this is very unlikely if the lights don't dim upon turning the key.

Nss
First, thanks everyone for the all the great advice.
Another issue which I figured was unrelated but now I'm wondering. I blew a fuse (still blown when trying to start car) for the radio, cigarette lighter, glove box lights etc. Is the NSS on this circuit and if so would, would a lack of power to the NSS (due to blown fuse) prevent me from starting the car?

Just bumping to see if anyone has any insight into my last response about the effect of a blown fuse on the NSS.
