Recommened Repair Manuals?

I've got a '79 300SD and need a good repair manual and/or information books. I'm very new to Diesels and to Mercedes but have a fair amount of self-taught experience working on my old in-board boat with a Ford 351.
I bought the Chilton's Mercedes 1974-84 Repair Manual but I'm not impressed. It shows where the dipstick is and how to hone the cylinder walls but not much in between. It's kind of a joke really.

Mercedes sells manuals on CD. Get one for a W123 and everything for the drivetrain should be the same or close.

MB sells a 116 Service Manual. The MB Manuals are the best thing to have. The paper books are much better than the CD's but they cost a lot more. You can find the books on ebay. The CD's are available from the MB Classics center - http://www.mbusa.com/heritage/classic-center-california.do. Click on the Technical Literature link under the Classic Center tab near the top. Then put in your car's info. And you'll want the Service Manual.

The paper manuals are much better than the CD`s. the ones on E-Bay
can become very costly. I bought a stack of 5 for the W123 for $212.00.
just one of the books, "service manual engine 617.95" sold recently for
$110.00.
Don`t get into a rush, watch how the bidding goes. sometimes a book
will go for $10.00 with 1 bid, next time there will be 20 bids.

I agree the Haynes is short in most areas. It`s just a guide at best.

If you do decide to go the e-bay route, and you see a manual you want,
remember. that isn`t the only one left out there. sooner or later therewill
be another and sometimes 3 up at the same time.

The manuals are only worth whatever the bidder is willing to pay.
