I'm refering to this old post because of this picture that Parrot of Doom posted from what I believe is a 1997 E300 Turbo Diesel. I have a 1998 (exact same engine).. My question is: what is the black tube that starts in front of the fuel filter, goes over the entire intake manifold, and disappears somewhere in front of the passenger's side? And why does my 1998 not have one? -Mike

POD is in the UK. They got the turbo one year earlier than we did here. That tube is the vacuum line going to the brake booster. You can see the booster in the upper corner of the shot on what we would call the "passenger" side...

Since we're talking about that booster line, where is it a safe place to loosen it as I need to replace that rubber grommet.

So what's the answer to why I don't have one on my '98? And since michakaveli asked his question, I rekon he does have the booster line as well. And I see he is in the U.S.

My '97 non-turbo has this booster line which looks like it goes to the brake master cylinder and comes from the vacuum pump??

Mike, you'd better have this line otherwise, your brakes must be pretty stiff...
It should just come off the vacuum pump just as seen in the photo. Only difference is that where his turns left, yours will turn right, go through the panel and into the booster.

My 99 has it too; POD's is right hand drive. Ours aren't; our line is routed more cleanly to the opposite side so you dont notice it.

Gotcha. Guess I never really noticed because it was never an issue or in my way. That IM is a Pain in the butt enough to remove on ours. Must really be fun doing it on the Euro versions!

Not much of a pain for me any more... If I have the encapsulation panel off and use an air ratchet, I can have mine off in under 5 min.

O ring part number
The MB dealer cannot find part number for 606 engine delivery valve O rings.
Anyone have that handy? Thanks, Dave |

OK, having read this over again, I have a question. When the elements are removed, do you have to get the pump re-calibrated? I keep thinking that any time you unscrew them, it messes up the calibration.
Is this not what the splined hold-down plates are supposed to do?

Evan - The holder just holds things down.
Folks seem to encounter difficutly when they pull the element and/or collar out of the body of the IP. I would recommend leaving both in place. No one I know of who has done that has had a problem afterwards. You do need to excersize caution when lifting the holder as the spring sometimes falls/jumps out and the element is balanced on the collar and is very exposed.

I'm getting new 7mm elements here in the near future and I'll have to pull them somehow. I'm pretty cautious and not at all ham-fisted but I like to know what to watch out for before I start grabbing onto things! I'm also reading that I need new "crush" washers when I replace the elements. True? Part numbers?
Thanks for the reply!

The splined plates keep the barrel from rotating - it's just a simple locking mechanism, to prevent them from vibrating loose. It doesn't affect calibration. No need to recalibrate if you're just changing delivery valve seals & O-rings.
HOWEVER... you cannot put larger elements in without having the pump recalibrated by a Bosch shop! What pump / engine / car is getting the 7mm elements? Are the elements sourced from Myna? |
