500,000 Miles!!

Hey everyone!

Our “black car” finally hit the half million mile marker. The car is a 1991 350SD Turbo. I thought that I would celebrate the news with the fellow diesel fanatics that would appreciate its accomplishment. The history of the car is as follows:

We purchased the car from one of our close family friends (original owner) at 225,000. The car has had an engine replacement (done at around 125k) due to a timing chain problem. (which in turn did some major engine damage). After that the head gasket was replaced at 275,000 as well as a transmission re-build which was done at around 300k. Yes, the car did have some bad luck with its initial engine replacement but other than that, I’d consider the repairs fairly common.

In the pictures the car looks absolutely filthly and I love it. Don’t get me wrong, I love a car that is washed and waxed, but I also love cars that are put the hell and back and still running like champs. To have a car go half a million in California is one thing but to have it go that kind of distance in the brutal weather of Minnesota (ie; burning hot and humid in the summer and ice cold in the winter) says something to the testament of classic W126 Mercedes engineering.

Comments welcome!

awww you missed the 500,000 moment on camera..

not to shabby for a 350SD... keep it going!

do they salt the roads up there?

Was it a factory motor replacement?

If not, whatever company it was should be alerted; I thought replacement engines normally don't have the longevity of new ones.

Congrats.

I love the ice streaks above the headlights!

Actually, its salt. It's amazing to me that the car hasn't rusted yet.

Congratulations. That is great. It is nice to hear some good news on a 1991 350 SD!

That's probably a 30K mile a year pace, year after year. Not bad! Looks amazingly solid for that kind of mileage, especially in the salt belt.
I guess the new engine took care of the rod bending issue of the original......:)
Keep it going. That speedo is a badge of honor!

That's cool! Congratulations.

Great looking car and congratulations on the mileage :) Mine is just about to hit 200,000, you've made me feel about 1 inch tall now :)

raMBow 01-25-2008 06:56 PM

That is Beautiful!!!

I love the fact that it is slogging away and doing it's job. All that dirt and salt is like sweat in the automotive world.

What, no badges???

matthias08 01-25-2008 07:01 PM

Awesome! Another 120,000 and you can get that magical 1,000,000 km badge (if my math is right, probably not..).

Greenbushy 01-25-2008 09:24 PM

Congradulations, what a work horse, makes my 340623km (211653 miles) on my W123 look like its just run in
