Yeah, come to think of it, that is the case more often than not. I think the only time I have been able to get it before paying it off is if the office kept it in his file instead of putting it into the system.

Further complexity is that in some cases the title isn't held at the local branch. Takes time for the main office to send the title. You can probably make arrangements to have the title at the local branch for the transfer.

Yet another complexity is paperless titles. Many financial institutions in California don't hold a hardcopy of the title. I don't know how they handle transfers.
