76 300D Starter Removal Nightmare

Well, we're trying to get the starter out of my 1976 300D. It's loose already, all wires and bolts off but we can't get it out of the car. So far, it seems impossible without removing the tie rod (aka driving 15 miles to town to get the fork to take it off). We've tried jacking it up and wiggling the wheels back and forth to get a bigger space, but no dice.

I also can't remove my exhaust manifold to take it out from the top due to a stripped bolt.

Anybody out there got some Saturday-saving advice??

Thanks,

Deanna

It will come out thru the bottom. I've done it. Wheels have to be in just the right position. In fact, somewhere in a post from about 5 yrs ago I described the exact place it comes out. My recollection is that it is in front of the front crossmember but my memory is not exact. Starter has to be in the correct orientation as well as the tie rods and suspension. I had the car jacked up with weight off the front wheels.

A few years ago there was a study which showed that high testosterone levels increased spatial awareness. Might try to find a real horny guy to take a look at it. (That's a joke)

Here's the thread with the directions:

Much easier to do from above. On our 300D to do it we removed the battery, heat shield, exhaust, air cleaner....and then we were able to get it out. From below it was near impossible.

Difference is, you had a turbo in the way. Neither she nor I had a turbo.

Come to think of it, a 76 is not a 123 is it? My advice probably doesn't apply in the case of a 115 (except maybe the horny guy part).

Nope, doesn't work

I see what you're saying Kerry, but the exhaust pipe is just a little bit too wide to get the solenoid under it.

Utterly lacking in horny guys, I drove to town and got the fork to take the tie arm off, at which point it came right out.

Problem now is the starter I got at the junkyard to replace it is too small....but that's another story.....just like the rust around the passenger side jack point....dammit....

I know he already got the starter out but I was wondering-would it have helped if the solenoid removed before attempting to get it by the exhaust pipe?
