Partially-clogged tank vent?
A partly clogged fuel tank vent might fit those symptoms. Also easy to verify. Try running the car with the fuel filler cap either off or at least cracked loose so the tank can vent through the cap. Either that, or next time this happens get out and open the fuel cap and see if you hear a big swoosh of air entering.

Check the MAF. |
Can this MAF be checked with basic home garage tools? If so, what would I look for?
|
I don't think you have any MAF.

The 95
doesn't have a check engine light....thank God.

It's for the EGR junk. My car has one and it's a 90. And on the check engine light...if it doesn't have one, have the codes read. You might find something there. |
His car has the OM606 NA, as does my '96. Mine has no MAF. It does have EGR (of course).
|
In that case it may be worth checking to see if something silly with the EGR is happening, like its stuck open.

check engine light in a 90 W124.128
recently bought a 1/91 W128.128 and doubt very much that this model has a check engine light feature. Also checked the Owner's manual and could not find a ref. there. Are you sure????

I stand corrected...I dug through the EPC and couldn't find one. I would think that the computer would want that info for the EGR control like on the 90-93 cars with the 602. But there isn't a turbo so that could have something to do with it. The computer in the 95 probably stores codes without a check engine light. (Here I go again) Mine does and it requires a little box to read out the number of flashes an LED makes. Not sure if it's the same on the 95 E300. Might be some early version of OBD or something.

Thanks for the added discussion. I could not find any evidence of a check engine light. I am changing the fuel filters today and if that doesn't help I will take to the Mercedes dealer in Sugerland, TX for a check-up (complimentary loaner car). This will take a few days and I will post the results. Thanks again

You're going to take a 13 year old car to a dealer for a check up?
:eek::eek: Uh, okay. Anyhow back on topic I would bet that the motor was not over revved and you have a simple issue to run down. |
One thing that is simple to try and no cost is to disconnect the negative battery cable and let the computer shut down. It will reboot when you hook the battery cable back up and that may help. I'd say you need to keep the battery disconnected for an hour or more to be sure everything has reset electronically on the car. And be aware that this could cause your radio to lock up and request a radio code. Be sure you have the radio unlock code before doing this.
If the problem is computer related this should clear it. I think it is not computer related, but this is something easy you can eliminate without any cost or help. Ken300D |
