82 300 SD hood star angle.

ok, somebody keeps posting on here that the hood star needs to be straight up. but the base of the star on my car is molded for the star to sit about 15° back... with it straight up, there is a gap in the escontion so how is it supposed to sit?

I don't think it is supposed to be straight up on the 126. As far as I can remember they haven't done that for years. I know on the 124 it is angled back at the same angle as the grille, which I think was as angled back as it ever was on any MB at the time.

Of course it is supposed to be able to move around a bit; on mine I can pretty much bend it to any angle I want and it will pretty much spring back to normal. It needs a little help to click back into position, but there's a definite correct position that I can feel.

Mines like that too.
Looks like it's angled slightly in the pics that TX76513 posted also.

...and heaven help me if I'm driving and I notice it's been bumped and is crooked. I've had to pull over and fix it because my OCD just can't take it.

I don't know about the star angle, but I have to walk around my car three times and buff the left fender twice before I can get in it and drive it . . . .

the w126 is no sports car. i installed a w115 hood star on there... i think it looks better then the one that came with the car. sits taller, the points of the star are sharper. it just looks more stately. and it stands straight up and down.

if you tilt it back toward the windshield it appears that your car is faster

The original stars were vertical. The replacement stars are swept back a bit.

There is a sweet spot with the star tilted back just as it is shown in the pics attached on the third reply. However if you tilt it forward to make it vertical it can be done too. On blueprints it's actually tilted slightly backwards

Me too.

When I say "Straight up" I am not talking about hood-to-trunk alignment. I am talking about left-to-right alignment.

On my w126, I keep the star's hood-to-trunk alignment maybe just a few degrees back toward the windshield from straight up - the way it seems to rest most comfortably in the little mount thing.

Straight up looks like it's leaning too far forward for my taste. I assumed there was only the one proper angle back towards the windshield - when I complain about it not being "straight" i'm talking about horizontal positioning, not.. what's my word? vertical? lateral... who cares
