FYI: OM617.951 valve guides bad

This is an engine I am rescuing.

Massive smoking + Massive blow by into air cleaner.
It still had great power on the highway, and was getting 24 MPG.

Bad head gasket + possible minor warped head = could be serviced.
Cylinder #1 compression 380 psi.
Cylinder #2 compression 350 psi.
Cylinder #3 compression 100 psi + soaked with diesel.
Cylinder #4 compression 350 psi.
Cylinder #5 compression 380 psi.

The following damage turned this head into a core.

Cam lobes and rockers show excess wear = flat spots and scalping.
Slop on the valve guides is 0.44 + not minus.
Valve stem seals are all junk.
Exhaust valve faces and seats show serious deterioration.
All valve stems show serious scoring and wear.

I found a good used head to replace it 128,000 miles, and still looks new.
Went back for the bottom end.

More data and pictures later.

####################

om617 head warp

permissible unevenness of parting surface:

Longitudinal direction 0.08 mm

Transverse direction 0.0 mm

Have a great day.

Hmm

I forgot about this one.
For closure.

Sorry, I can't find the pictures.
The cylinder head was perfect.
The owner is happy.
125k on the engine since the repair.
The only issue since then was a failed primer pump.

.
